Japanese earthquake

I awoke this morning and saw the news on TV. The footage of the tsunami is devastating. My thoughts go out to all those in Japan and in neighboring countries who will get hit by the relentless waters in the coming hours...

the estimated arrival time is about 5 hours from now.

Not that a decent rescue response, with competent medical care and so on does anything for the ones who were killed.

Ed, you should be ok; the coast around Santa Barabara faces southward enough that most of the force of the tsunami should sweep past almost parallel to the coast.
Here in LA we appear to be protected by the Channel Islands.
But for a bad combination of population density, perpendicular coast, and undersea formations focusing the water, I'd say the worst in California will be Monterey and the small towns like Marina just north of it.

EDIT: I recall some flat beaches south of Morro Bay...they have golf courses just inland because it floods easily...

Magnitude 8.9 is extremely strong, I believe in the top 10 strongest recorded with instrumentation. I called my Sister who lives on the beach in the San Francisco area, fortunately she's at work which is a safe distance. She's been told to expect 3 feet, which is definitely enough to ruin her stuff. She heard about it on the way to work so she's trying to get a hold of a friend to get her pug out.

So many friends in Japan, but like many go players, I suffer from the common go player "social disease" where the first thing I ask is what someone's strength is, instead of their names. I like to think I am not as bad as some about this - I generally get folk's names and where they live - but "Japan" is usually my stopping point. Its not like I am ignorant of Japanese geography - but I have no clue where my friends live.

The aftershocks keep hitting in a pattern that doesn't decline in frequency as much as one normally expects. This suggests that the so-calle 'main' earthquake is just one of many foreshocks to something bigger. I fear that we may see something in the 9 or even 10 range within the next week, somewhere along the western edge of the Pacific plate, from Alaska to the Pilipines.

That's a lot of strong aftershocks. That 7.1 aftershock was stronger than the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti last year. Thank goodness Japan is much better prepared, though with an earthquake and tsunami this size, there's no way to avoid large amounts of devastation.

BBC is claiming it is the biggest earthquake to hit Japan in 150 years.

Last year I drove up the West Coast highway and saw the tsunami warning signs at the low points in the road all the way from Redwoods to Olympic Peninsula. Glad I'm not daring to drive it today.

HI seemed to make it through OK for the most part.

My thoughts go out to those affected around the whole Pacific Rim.

That is an extraordinary prediction, do you have any expertise in this area? There is no record in human history of an earthquake in the 10 range, the worst ever recorded was 9.5, and this 8.9 is up in the top 10 worst earthquakes ever recorded.

No formal expertise, just the knowledge of a amateur science geek who has lived for decades in one of the other earthquake prone areas.
One of the rules of thumb that has been rather durable is that the frequency of aftershocks for N days after the quake is 1/N. That is, there should be half as many aftershocks on the second day, 1/10 on the tenth day, etc. So far, as we approach the second day, there are too many aftershocks to fit that pattern. Whether or not they are statistically significant, I can't say. We would need a few more days' worth of data to be sure.

Joaz: how reliable is this rule of thumb? Unless it's perfect, you can't tell much just because 9.5 or 10 earthquakes are so incredibly rare.
