losing streak

Post by emeraldemon »

After about a month without playing, I've started playing on KGS again and lost four straight games. I don't know if I've lost confidence or forgotten how to play or what. This is the only one that was close, I lost by 5.5. But if white hadn't made the endgame blunder at 178 I think it would have been more like W+10 or worse. Please help me get back on track!

Looking forward to stronger players reviewing this game since I'm around the 2k level myself. But just a few comments while I'm here:

Joseki choice in the top-left made h17 a really good point for W. Not sure, my gut feel there is to pincer low and hope W runs out, allowing you to play the extension while vaguely attacking his pincered group. If he jumps into the corner, take the wall to the open left side. Later look to split up the top side by picking on L16, which is a little too far from either W neighbor and is high. Same type of result if he re-approaches from the top.

Then, c13 ended up solidifying W on the left with a few points in return for a B wall, but h17 is already very well placed to limit the wall, and F17 looks really cramped. D15 and B17 also feel slow when the board is still very open.

I didn't like the result after e12; e12 seems dubious because the typical line of play there ends up with B building out towards the center while W solidifies the side. But B is already undermined by h17, and prior to the sequence the side looks susceptible to invasion, whereas after w is pretty solid along the side, and B has a weak group to take care of.

Though you certainly made a game of it to bring it back to a 5 point margin. I don't like to think of them as "losing streaks" but rather "learning streaks" :P
Keep in mind, I am frequently wrong.
