Likedness and rank or no answer without question.

Post by tapir »

Did anyone else notice that the number of likes is approximately proportional to rank. Why is that, do we like intelligent answers but underestimate the contribution of intelligent questions to that answers? :geek:

I for one appreciate (and like) a good question as much as a good answer.

Dumb and mediocre questions get smart answers.

Also, the most liked posters are typically heavy posters. And the heavy posters are a bit higher in rank--dan level usually. I'm an outlier on both counts, but I think I don't get liked because I'm an argumentative blowhard, rather than because I'm weak (even though it's true). So your trend is a bit smaller than it would appear because of that confounding factor.

For every good question, there tend to be a few good answers to it. So yes, it is probably proportionally easier for a lot of likes to happen from answering questions to asking them.

I guess we are better at recognizing cleverness than wisdom? I fit right in. I "liked" hyperpape's answer and only later thought I really should "like" tapir's original question! :grumpy:

Likes prefer
- topics liked by users liking to issue likes
- history information
- reports on Asia
- stupid jokes
- answers with emotional agreement regardless of factual (in)correctness
- simple answers to simple questions

Likes abstain from
- other topics
- factually correct but detailed answers
- answers not using security risky JavaScript excessively

Likes do not reflect relative quality of contents and are a very weak indicator of playing strength.

Koroviev, I have noticed that some Likes issuing users like messages with diagrams or games shown in L19's JavaScript-dependent features. As a consequence, users like me who restrict their JavaScript activation a lot get much less Likes from the aforementioned users.

JavaScript is a security risk because
1) L19's programmers might intentionally... (well, too unlikely, until such would be proven)
2) L19's programmers can make mistakes like all programmers and such bugs can be exploited by external malware specialized in attacking weak webpage programming
3) L19 might be severely hacked by external malware, replace JavaScript code and expect careless readers of L19 to have activated JavaScript in their browsers
4) JavaScript allows in principle execution of random code (subject to other security barriers)

So it is not LOL but serious.

Javascript is used by the diagrams for a couple of reasons, but one reason in particular is to parse diagram text to allow for title text to be posted separately from the image returned by the php.

I could look into ways to generate the diagrams independently of javascropt, but I'm not quite sure how to do it atm while retaining the current diagram functionality.

Javascript is also very inconvenient for those of us who need to access L19 through seven proxies due to severe anti-go persecution!

Actually, I've noticed that with the exception of a few rare edge cases, most people have around the same ratio of posts-to-liked
Tactics yes, Tact no...
