C'mon. I thought Araban's point was fine. Hirata obviously has a huge wealth of accumulated experience and talent. It's no surprise that he can play very well. But it's also not at all surprising if his age leads to inconsistency. Maybe it's not expected that he'll lose to a European 4d, but it's not quite a shock.

Aha

Well, no one said that
Adrian
P.S. I'll stop here. This discussion is already pointless. At least to me...

I assumed it was a joke, actually.

It is to me. In my experience older players are generally more consistent than younger players.

It's not? I would consider it one of the most unexpected results I have ever seen at that level of play.

What do you think, does Hirata have any chance of winning the tournament? That would be really great, but I doubt it, because of his bad SOS...

I do not think he can make up the SOS difference to China or Korea at this point, so the only way it can happen is if China's Bai Baoxiang loses to Eric Lui the next round, and Taiwan beats Korea as well. And even then it is unlikely.

Re: World Amateur Go Championship 2011
According to the broadcast on World Baduk, Eric Lui just crushed the Taiwanese challenger. He should get 3rd place in the WAGC. He's had to face France, China, Korea, and Taiwan and by no means had a easy way through the WAGC. Congrats to Eric and USA for highest finish the USA ever got!!! To the streets my fellow Americans!

Final results: http://www.nihonkiin.or.jp/amakisen/wor ... esult.html
Congrats to China, Korea and USA
Also the result of the Polish 4d player is remarkable (13th place). He is the one using that special
strategy against stronger players
Thank you Japan for another great event

Thanks for the link.
So far, I've seen only one game of the polish representative on the official site. Are there others somewhere ?
