A barn-burner of a game - 10k

Post by thequietcenter »

I played White in this game. I would appreciate some feedback on the early play. Afte awhile it was just sloppy on both sides, definitely I could learn how to play better against this unorthodox opening.

10: Should be at P5. As long as you make approach moves that allow him to run out, he can tenuki.

12: C14 is better. You have a 4-4 stone, which wants to expand along the sides or into the center. He has already taken one side. Use the other.

20: This is thin. The simple tobi looks safer.

24: Try to connect with C8.

60: A10 kills

72: No point in leaving a weakness for him to peep at. C18 is normal if you have sub-dividable room, Or B18 if you are willing to fight ko to get two eyes.

92: The right idea, but a tad too ambitious. He can live with j3 - it has miai extensions. K3 might be better.

112: Good.

116: You have him surrounded, so running does him no good. Thus, it is time for the next step: eye killing. Try H2.

128: Good!

202: Generally it is a bad idea to atari a cutting stone unless you can kill it quickly, or unless you must force it one way because you are particulatly weak on the other side. In this instance, you could just ignore it and connect northward. Or you could push it eastwards.
Note that a cutting stone, when first played, has two liberties. If you atari it, and it extends, it now has 3 liberies. By chasing it, you make it 1.5 times stronger.
