Re: Ready for a Malkovich match

Post by Sevis »

I think this should be in the Malkovich registration thread, but I'll go ahead and accept. 8 kyu KGS (but probably overranked), I would suggest Japanese rules, no handicap, 0.5 komi, open joseki dictionaries/other books, me playing white, or same, but with two handicap and 6.5 komi. Of course, an even game is also fine.

If you don't mind, I'll stick to diagrams.

I somewhat prefer this over the typical D4 response -- it invites a cross fuseki (which I will have an easier time exploiting), and breaks the symmetry, not letting black play mirror go (probably not a significant chance of that, but it happens).

I know more about my opponent's playing style than he knows about mine. He seems to prefer moyos, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a Chinese fuseki. Expected:

I don't like :b8: in this diagram, so I think I may instead approach from the other side. If I stick to this, a-d are reasonable, I think.

How easy was it for you to make your move after mine and post a diagram?

Well, it was a matter of grabbing a default diagram, then adding two stones. I'd say that's simpler than downloading the SGF, adding a move, then uploading it again, especially seeing as the SGF (as it is) does not show the order of the moves, and does not, therefore, help much.

Aha, so he isn't going to play Chinese! That's nice to hear, although he could still play small Chinese. I think I'll allow him to get a shimari, although this looks interesting:

However, I am not at all a fan of 3-4 approach moves: all the joseki I know end up being beneficial for the defender. On the other hand, giving away a shimari isn't great -- but I will have sente, and will be able to approach Q16.

In SmartGo, I have this game saved. I just play your move and then play mine and then choose "Edit -> Copy" and then click "sgf-full" and then paste the SGF. You dont mind how I handle my moves do you?

I thought of playing at O3, but I always play p3 and until I'm 1 dan (if I ever get there), there is no need to explore new openings as Black. One opening is all I need. I would've approached his corners, but he played no 3-4 stones. And so my move is the correct one per Yang Yiluns "Ranking the Big Opening Moves"

It is a bit slow to have to start up the sgf handler everytime. You can just hit quote when replying, modify the move you want, and submit.

SmartGo also may be able to copy and paste in the format used here for diagrams. I'm not sure, but it's worth looking.

And I found it here...

It is really easy to quote and edit the diagram. And, for what it's worth, makes for more comfortable viewing IMO.

If you quote somebody, won't you be able to read thier hiden comments?
While I was teaching the game to a friend of mine, my mother from the other room:
"Cutting? Killing? Poking out eyes? What the hell are you playing?"

You're right. I've never done Malkovich and forgot that part.

I do not want to prompt him into strengthening his right (even at the cost of the top). I think that starting a fight may be a good idea eventually -- I think I am better at fighting than at fuseki (granted, I am horrible at both).

I expect a pincer.

Please fix your move numbers. :)
And yes, it's very dangerous to press "quote" when you're in a Malkovich game. :)
