ethan, I believe, in Go at least, the Chinese got kyu/dan in a kind of full-circle reverse-cultural exchange back from the Japanese.
(John or others more knowledgeable can enlighten us on this.) Not sure about the martial arts.
What does 'kyu' mean?

actually, i thought that they were originally go ranks (invented by Honinbo Dosaku) extended into martial arts...

Originally invented in a Go school in the Edo period,[1] this system was later applied to martial arts by Kano Jigoro, the founder of judo and later introduced to other East Asia countries."
