Spotify Launches in the US

Post by Redundant »

Spotify has started offering service to the US. You currently need invites, but they're not too hard to get (took me <10 minutes to track one down). I'm liking the service so far, but probably won't use it too much, as I'm not a huge fan of listening to highly compressed mp3s.

Anyone else have experience with Spotify?

Mm...reading about Spotify, I don't see how it's any better than what I currently use for streaming music, Grooveshark.

So far, Spotify seems to have better tags, and it also will play local mp3s. Also, spotify runs in it's own desktop client.

Hmm, I just started using it. It's pretty nice, although I wish all of my Korean/Japanese songs didn't have their titles screwed up. The songs I can search for outside my local library are pretty limited too, though maybe that's just because my musical tastes are unusual :P.

Searching sucks, and I think their interface is ugly and hard to read (it's white text on a dark gray background, and you can't change the font size). For free, it's pretty much like radio - one or two songs, then commercials. I was actually thinking recently of paying the €5 a month to try it for a while, but searching sucks so bad - especially for classical music, which interests me most - that I probably won't bother.

It recently imposed severe limitations to how much music you can listen through it. 10 hours a month and no more than 3 or 5 times each track. As if Jonathan from Spotify telling you about same mobile apps for hundredth time wasn't annoying enough.

"Pay us 10 euros a month and we'll stop being jackass towards you."

Yeah... had the same experience with Pandora a while back.
In the long run, not many services will remain free. They either fold or start charging or put ads or whatever. Got upset recently with desktop nexus, among other things.

I find it much easier to actually BUY (yes, yes, with the thing called PAYING being part of the process) what music I like, put it on my mac, and then listen to it as many times as I like. Failing that, iTunes has a pretty decent radio selection, I think (only use it occasionally).

PS.1>
For the (very) young internet-crazy everything-for-free and to-hell-with-ownership generation:
BUY = exchange a specific amount of MONEY to obtain something you want;
PAYING = the process of giving MONEY in exchange for something you want.
MONEY = weird colored paper and small silly metal discs you can found in mall fountains.
...you might actually have to do it when you grow up, so start practicing, will ya?

PS.2>
For the (very) old:
Its like bartering, but involving less haggling and one side barters with weird papers and silly metal discs you find in-between sofa cushions.
...catch up with the new age, will you? lol

Don't do it present Bantari. Past Bantari is a loose cannon, but he'll calm down when he gets (a few minutes) older.

It looks like you can get a free invite from Spotify's US homepage.
