common joseki deviation question!
Hi everyone,
This situation commonly comes up in my games. 9 seems to me like a mistake.. a very small move during the fuseki, but I'm never really sure how to react (as white)
Usually I play 1 below, to put the black group under pressure, which starts a sort of running battle which is not necessarily profitable... After black jumps to 2, I'm not sure whether to play A or B. What is the correct follow-up sequence?
It's appealing to deprive black of eye space, that's why I play it, but I have a hard time making profit from the attack afterwards..
In my games, about half of the time black escapes to middle somewhat easily and white ends up with two weakish groups on both sides. Is 1 a mistake? Playing immediately at b18 seems really submissive! Should White tenuki or play something different than 1 or what?
Thanks for your thoughts!!

Re: common joseki deviation question!
is just too slow for that stage in the opening. Go take some big points! In fairness, your response isn't bad either, but it is kind of complicated, and you will often end up in for a fight. On that board, most of the edges are wide open - let him have his few points in the top left and take something bigger

Re: common joseki deviation question!
On this board, I might play the following:
Keeping in mind that a move around this area could be big for black in the future:
Of course, if that worries you, you can always respond normally, and just let the game go from there:
There's probably no reason to hurry to steal an advantage.
Another idea that is coming to my mind, which may be completely silly is this:
Because I can compare it to this:
However, I still have to think about this response:
Interesting position, though.

If you are worried about it, you can always play:
"a" also looks fine with the lower left 4-4

I agree with topazg.
seems like a good response. I believe
and
hold a kind of miai status - if black takes one, its good to take the other. If you think of
and
as an exchange, has black really profited from it?

Thanks for your advice guys
Yeah I like c11, it seems like a good peaceful answer. If black plays j17 to patch up his position (although f15 might be better no?), maybe i can later aim to press him down with h16 and f16 in coordination with the c11 (or d10) stone

I also like

into a good move. Also, it seems rather obvious that the exchange of

Re: common joseki deviation question!
This reminds me of a hamete I saw a while ago:
Instead of fussing over moves like 'a' or 'b' and whether they work, the answer is quite simple:
Compare to this joseki sequence:
Clearly it is better for Black to have
than 'a'.

Re: common joseki deviation question!
I don't think that's joseki unless Black is weak in the area, which he clearly isn't:
Good for White.

Re: common joseki deviation question!
We are getting a bit off-topic, but here is a problem from a book, based on this corner position:
The solution is not at all obvious, so I will post it now, for those who cannot stand the suspense. Keep in mind that simple continuations are bad for W (see previous posts), so he needs to try something different to make sabaki:

Re: common joseki deviation question!
I think Bill's response is the clearest way to take an advantage:
However, Kirby's move at 'a' is very interesting, since black 9 is essentially a heavy move (as well as being slow).
