Hi everybody,
I'm Tamsin from Sensei's Library.

First of all, I'm sorry for much of the garbage I posted there over the years. I've decided that "wisdom listens", and so I won't be saying much about strategy, technique, or anything else until I'm really sure about it. I'm particularly sorry that the whole "force feeding" idea of massed study of L&D, etc., I proposed seems to have influenced a number of people. It just doesn't work.

Second, I've decided once again to study go. Even if I don't become stronger, the game is so interesting anyway. My study plan is very simple: learn new techniques and concepts, one at a time, and be patient.

My attitude is that go is a never-ending journey, and your opponent is much a partner as an adversary. Winning or losing are just temporary states along the way, and do not matter as much as the way in which you travel. After all, if you're playing at your proper level you'll lose half the time, anyway.

Hi Tamsin, welcome to the forums. No need to apologize about your posts on Sensei's Library. If learning how to play the game is a journey, than the same can be said about learning how to learn the game. Have fun with your renewed enthusiasm for the game, and may your groups also develop large amounts of eyes.

Tami welcome! Personally I enjoyed lots of your "garbage" and was disappointed when you stopped posting on SL. Based on my experience, if your are serious about "...and so I won't be saying much about strategy, technique, or anything else until I'm really sure about it", you will be real quiet pretty much forever! L19 is not designed for silence.

Maybe I was being just a little harsh on myself, but anyway I shall try very hard to put much more thought and research into anything I post. Having ideas is a good thing, learning how to sort the good ones from the less luminous ones is an even better thing.

I've been lurking here for a while, and I would like to note that I particularly enjoy John Fairbairn's contributions. To reach such an dizzying level at Japanese, Korean and Chinese, and to be a strong player and other enviable things to boot! We're really lucky that he shares his knowledge with us so freely and with such wit.

In the future, I would like to post some ideas about study techniques. Recently, I have been studying the psychological literature, and it seems that many players make certain basic mistakes in the way they approach the game. In fact, people make the same mistakes in the way they approach many things they really want to learn. Have you ever tried to learn two languages at the same time, and found that for some weird reason you improve fastest at the one that you spend least time on or have less passion for? "Force feeding" dozens, even hundreds, of problems, for example, is one very inefficient and unenjoyable way to study.

I have a pretty good idea of what does work now, after ten years (!) misspent on borderline crackpot schemes, and I'm applying them to the three things I have chosen to concentrate on: music, learning Japanese, and learning go. When I can demonstrate that these things really have worked for me, then I can publish ideas with greater authority and persuasiveness.
