Hi WMS,
I know you have said that you wish to have greater control over the client. My suggestion is, provided you have enough time, to make a flex client. This would be better supported on all mobile platforms, and anything that can use a web browser. I know this would mean that the client would be web based..but what isn't becoming that way these days?
Anyway, just thought I'd give some food for thought.
Flex client?

Re: Flex client?
Actually, I have said several times right here on this web site that I plan on writing an HTML based client.

Re: Flex client?
Flex is based on flash, so for compatibility it's only a little better than Java, but the Apple world would still be missing out... A true web-based client doesn't have that problem, HTML 5 works on pretty much any modern platform
