My impressions:

It's better to give the players the right to choose the partner, starting from #1 (Catalin Taranu).
So, he will be able to choose the weakest opponent from top 8 (will be fair).

This is an interesting idea, I think. But what if Taranu chooses Silt, for example? Then Silt, who was very successful so far, suddenly gets a very strong opponent. That seems unfair to Silt?

Perhaps the choice should be by the top four (in order), but only from the bottom four? (i.e Taranu, then Silt, then Shikshin, then Mitic get to choose from the list Debarre, Kachanovkyi, Dinerchtein, Burzo/Surin)

Silt vs Artem pair seems to be unfair. Ondrej Silt was 2nd in preliminary (very successful perfomance), but got a very hard opponent.

Yes, this is because Artem was very unsuccessful. Had the tournament continued as McMahon, like in previous years, then Silt-Artem would almost certainly also have been in the next pairing.

AFAIK, no official bracket has been made yet. The bracket we are talking about here is the one I calculated based on the EGC rules, which I posted in post #40 of this thread. I will repeat it here:

Kachanovskyi - Silt
Taranu - Burzo/Surin
Mitic - Dinerchtein
Shikshin - Debarre

(note: the order of the players here does not imply anything about the color they play with).

Again, this is not an official bracket!

Ah I see, thanks for clarifying. Burzo and Surin are playing their relegationmatch for the 8th spot at the moment (broadcasted via KGS).

Where can I see the sgf's of the quaterfinals? The Shikshin v Debarre game is on Go Sensations but I can't find the other three anywhere? I'm particularly keen to see how Taranu's & Cornel's game continued after I was driven to bed by tiredness at 1am.

The games were broadcast on KGS, and you can find the Taranu-Burzo game there by looking at the games of the user: EGC2011B4. The other quarterfinals were broadcast by EGC2011B1, EGC2011B2 and EGC2011B3

Catalin Taranu vs. Ilja Shikshin it is. They already played agaisnt each other in the EGC 2011 Pandanet European Team Championship Final where Ilja won W+12.5

In the game with Artem, Ilja won.

In the first part of the game, Artem had a good advantage and everyone thought he would win. But Ilja managed to build a moyo on the bottom and forced Artem to live inside with a ko. After Artem won this ko, Ilja took advantage and attacked big dragon on the left, which led to its death.
Ilja is really able to make wonders on the board. I definitely hope he wins tomorrow.

Wow, the Artem vs. Ilya game is really tough fighting! It's almost like watching the average Lee Sedol game - waay over my head

Addendum: even though white lost, move 188 (http://gokifu.com/s/mp3) is really interesting! My understanding of that move - no guarantees - is this: Artem knew that no matter what, black would have exactly one ko threat at the top, which is too big for white to ignore. White has exactly one local threat, and no other real threats. OK, so both sides have one threat. That means that to win the ko, white has to capture first. Thus, rather than starting the ko immediately by playing 2-1, he decided to give black a full move for free (!) by playing 1-1. Now, when the ko starts, white captures first! In other words, he is trading a full move for a single ko threat!! Think about that the next time you play an aji keshi à la "all I'm losing is a ko threat, nothing more"
