Hello from Seattle, WA

Post by jolson88 »

Well, Kirkland, WA to be more specific :). My name is Jason Olson. I originally got exposed to Go by my father-in-law. Then I found Hikaru No Go and really dug in. That was 4-5 years ago though and I stepped away from it completely over the last 4 four years (after the birth of my first son, and then second).

Long story short, Hikaru No Go is now on Netflix Instant Play and I find myself watching it again and back here. I was just starting to participate on GoDiscussions, KGS, and DGS when I took the break. So now I'm back all-around. Grabbed SmartGo Kifu and SmartGo Books for the iPad, and have enjoyed diving back into it (I forgot how much I love the elegance and beauty of the game).

One of these days, I'm bound to find some time to _finally_ get over to the Seattle Go Center and check out the local scene :). So great to still have such an active English Go forum on the web!

Welcome to L19! We would love to see you at the SGC, Tuesday and Saturday is always a good day to come by. We usually have a lot of young kids playing in the early afternoon, so feel free to bring the whole family. As long as your kids know not to eat the stones, we can teach them how to play Go ;).

Thanks! The wife and kids are out of town until a week from Sunday, so I'm definitely looking at coming into the Go Center on Tuesday. The only downside is that I work on the eastside and am not out of work until 4pm. So I would have to deal with traffic across 520. Oh well, looks like even with that, I would have plenty of time :).

How young do you think kids can start diving into Go? My youngest is definitely still a bit young (18 months), but my oldest may be getting close to a good age (almost four and a half).

We usually start kids off with Atari Go, which is as simple as checkers. That naturally leads to traditional Go. As for age, it really depends on the individual.
I hope to see you on Tuesday. I usually get sometime after six, so I'm always available for a late game.
