Can you help me?

Post by Akura »

Hey there,

I just played a game on KGS (as Black) and have questions on some moves:

I know that building such a big moyo with :b48: is wrong, as it's open at the bottom, what my opponent immediatly exploited. Should I have played B14 beforehand or something else, like attacking his right group?
Was it correct to play :b78: and abandon my two stones above in order to protect my territory?
Was it right to give up the corner with the moves from :b88: onwards?
What's the correct answer to White 109? N3?

Try 62 at B11.

78: No. In addition to being enormous, saving the two stones would mean that white still has to make eyes for his group.

90: should be at D3. (If white b5, you capture two white stones on the bottom and hence all white stones on the bottom.)

At 109, it's complicated, because you want to try and kill the corner if you can, but you're a little thin to actually do it.

112: Anyway, given what you played, this should be O4.

Thank you for your hints, they help me a lot!

And I think you meant 52 at B11, not 62.

Nope, I meant 62. You can capture something if you throw in first. :)

Edit: I did mean A11, though. :)

I think at 116 you can push or jump into the corner from your ponnuki. The stone at K2 is positioned to support a clamp if he tries to cut you off at m2.
Keep in mind, I am frequently wrong.

What I find most remarkable about your play is that you did not attack when you had the advantage.

34: You have overwhelming influence on this board. The pincer of 32 is the right spirit. Just keep being forceful. Try P17. He must reply with P18 or you decimate him. Then you play O16.

36: The primary idea of a pincer is to crowd the opponent. S17 is too casual, failing to follow up on the theme of the pincer. He is short of eye space. Crowd him with S18.

68: Again, just a tad too casual. Play M10.

90: Why are you retreating here? You have way more power backing you up than he does. Connect at D3. Then you are threatening B2 and E2.

94: He is safe now. Saving this stone is two points. But look over on the right side. He has a group sitting out in the open like a baby seal.

150: You have a weak group surrounded, and you spent a total of one second to decide that you had to make a defensive move. Have a look at N12. I'm too lazy to read it out, but at a glance I think that it kills.

BTW, the problem with 48 is not that it may be open at the bottom, rather the problem is that you are thinking of a wall as something to use to build territory. Walls are best used for fighting.

Thank you, Joaz, for your very useful advice! With :b48: I actually hoped, my opponent would invade instead of crawling on the second line.
It seems, the proverb "Consider where a kyu would play, and play one point to the left" is more than true for my game.
