I'm currently reading the new Neil Stephenson novel "REAMDE". Starting on page 275, Go gets a shout out as one of the Russian "security officers" realizes that although he sees the world in terms of Chess, the rapidly devolving situation he is in is closer to a game of Go. He realizes that he is going to have to respond in kind, even though he has never played a game of Go in his life. :D

I used to work at the same place as Neil Stephenson. One of his friends was a bit of a go addict. :)

That was Michael Loceff's doing. ( the top executive producer). He is about 10kyu, an i met him on KGS back on the day. I gave him lessons and he sent me the second season of 24 full with the autographs of all the writers.

Did you noticed? This is not go. It should be another similar game. There are two dead stones in the middle of the board still there even without any liberty. Moreover we can count 48 white stones and only 33 black ones. How many prisoneers for a middle game phase! Nevertheless, we cannot find 15 prisoners in the second picture. Definitively, this is not a mainstream go sighting :D

Ops... Excuse me. I didn't presented me. Ciao, I write from Italy and this is my first post. I would like to promote go in my country but... It seems that the mainstream here is bunga-bunga.

No, Ayaros. It's supposed to be Go, but the TV people knew very little.
This happens all the time. Of course, these errors are obvious to anyone who knows the basic rules.
It is a very mainstream Go sighting, because this show got over 300,000,000 hits online.

Jeffery Deaver's book, Edge, has a main character who plans strategies based on various board games, and Go is discussed a few times. Haven't read it myself, but my co-worker enjoyed it and mentioned it to me.

In the korean movie "The Man from Nowhere", there's a scene where the hero goes into a bodega. The old guy at the counter is replaying a game on his board while look at the record.

Cool movie, but also kinda dumb

Currently reading Neil Stephenson's new novel "REAMDE" where he invokes Go to describe a complicated situation.

There was an episode of Diagnosis Murder once where Dr Sloan plays Go with a murderer... It went some way to explain the aims of the game and the mindset of the player, too - more than a passing reference to the game, or a shot of a go board, which is nice.

In Patrick Rothfuss' novel "The Wise Man's Fear", the main character is taught a game by a noble which sounds precisely like Go, It's very beautifully described and stretches over several pages. I should sit down and type it up. (The book suffers from the "second novel of a trilogy" issue, but the writing itself is as brilliant as in the first; just story-wise nothing really happens.)
