Richard Bozulich RIP rumors

I am saddened to learn, via Twitter, of the death of Richard Bozulich, founder of Kiseido books.

He is probably one of the people who has done most for the game of go in the west. I'd had the occasional e-mail exchange with him over the years, and he was always friendly and helpful. I don't know what this means for the future of Kiseido, but he will be missed.

I don't usually comment on these, but since I had the fortune of doing business with Mr Bozulich once, and he provided the best service and advice possible, I have to say this: it's a huge loss. RIP.

My Richard story is...

Thirty-odd years ago, when I first came to Japan and was living a couple of hours outside of Tokyo, I visited the Nihon Ki-in one day to check the book store. No sooner did I get there and start looking around than I was accosted by this crazy foreigner who introduced himself as Richard Bozulich and wanted to know who I was and what I was doing there. He did not give me a chance to answer really, but instead dragged me into the elevator and took me up stairs to meet John Power. I never ran into Richard again - never made the effort. All of a sudden today I realize that the chance will never come again.

In one sense that is sad. But at the same time I realize that Richard has been a constant presence in my life for the last thirty-five years. Ever since the day that I picked up the 1971 Honinbo Tournament book in a book store in San Francisco (mistaking it for a chess book at the time) and began my love affair with Go. I regret that it is too late to shake his hand and thank him for all the joy that I have had from his life's work. Here's to you Richard...

His passing is certainly a great loss to the go world. I, too, acquired my go addiction through his publications and I, too, owe him a great debt of gratitude. I never met him in person but I had some helpful correspondence with him and I feel I knew him through the style of the Ishi Press and Kiseido books.

I don't want to imagine what the world of Go in the west would have been like without Mr. Bozulich. It's a sad loss, but we should not feel sad. We should be celebrating his life and his contributions.

Very sad. I met Mr. Bozulich once years ago on a rainy day at their Santa Monica location
and bought about 20 books from him, including the 3-volume Ishida dictionary.
He just happened to be in Los Angeles for a few days, visiting his mom, I think.
He even autographed The Second Book of Go for me. I've made a few more purchases
directly from him over the years, and he was always very professional
and provided great service.

I went to bed last night to find three of his books on my bedside table. His contributions to the western go world will continue to be appreciated long after his passing. Thank you Mr. Bozulich, RIP.
