I actually put a lot of time into this whole thing, verifying things and otherwise. And not all newspapers publish obituaries online, by the way.

Still no excuse. Did you contact other go associations who might have more knowledge of Richard personally? Did you send an e-mail to Kiseido?

My recall, the article is now down, was that the posting clearly stated that the obit would "soon be published" or something like that, in the "Japan Times" or something like that.

So, by my recall of the post, I was not sure it was published - so kirkmc, given your strong "no excuse" policy - it seems to me you did not read it very well before you posted it here.

Huh?

It's probably best to report something like this the way the AGA website did on their website with facts on how the statement came to their attention and how they are trying to confirm the statement.

He probably meant that as a journalist, you should have checked up on the sources yourself before relaying the obit given your strong "no excuse" policy towards the publisher of the original article.

kirkmc wrote:So, wait, you got the obituary by email, but don't have any link to it being published anywhere? Dude, journalism 101: always confirm your sources.

If this is false, then my apologies for relaying it here.

As you should know, that isn't how journalism works nowadays. It's about who gets it out first.

If you're going to criticize people for jumping the gun, then David would be one of the last people you should criticize. Read his post again. He did his job.

I trusted that the site had correct information; that they had done the necessary checking. Since I don't read Japanese, I wouldn't have been able to check it very thoroughly.

Would be nice if you bothered to check Google to find out the The Japan Times is "the most widely read English-language newspaper in Japan". Just because I know you live in France doesn't mean I should assume you only speak French :)

I honestly have never looked for any Japanese newspapers on the web, so while I could have assumed there might be one in English, it really wasn't up to me to check.

Via Twitter, Anders just posted that he has confirmation that Richard Bozulich is indeed still alive.

After receiving several emails from Richard over the last few days, as well as getting confirmation from a source in Japan that Richard is alive, I can only conclude that Richard Bozulich is indeed alive, which is very happy news.

You trusted your source, David trusted his source, and I can't say I can blame either of you. How often does it happen that someone fakes a story about another person's death, after all?

Anyway, lets all just be glad that Richard is still alive! :D

Please take no offense. This, my first go problem, was created with great respect (if not skill).

Black to play, is Richard Bozulich alive or dead?:

It is not a true triple ko. A triple ko has three kos all of which affect the same thing ( usually the life of death of a group). In this instance, it is a double ko on the right and a separate single ko on the left. If black tries to play it like a triple ko, white will fill at E4 and kill the 'R', then come back and kill the 'B' at his leisure.
