is part of the flow. Black wants White to connect at "b" in which case Black will jump to "c" and attack White's stones while erasing the potential to the left. Naturally White resists at

. This combined with

protects the gap at "b" in sente. Two weeks ago Sakai Hideyuki
played along these lines against Kono Rin in the NHK Cup on Japanese TV. Black's jump to "c" in the game posted above is unusual as far as I know. It allows (invites?) White to play in at 8, which protects "b" without allowing Black to strengthen the right side.
