Server disconnects

Post by Donovitch »

Seems that my connection to the KGS server is flaky at best, while my internet connection is fine. From the moment I try to log on I occasionally get strange lag where the program is responsive (or at least appears to be) while I am unable to access any additional data. This has happened on numerous occasions and I would like to know if it is just some sort of software issue or if the KGS server is just unhappy with some people.

Both. KGS has general issues with lag and disconnection that affect a lot of people, but when you are having huge problems with lag, going to a cafe, changing your ISP, or moving will almost certainly solve the problem.

Hi. I have the same time lag problem. But it comes to worst. If lag time didn't count for your time earlier it is count now.

I lost several games on time. I thought it my was fault to been slow. But in last game I noticed that when my opponent seemingly used couple bayoumi periods when he moved those periods subtracted from my time. And at last it was huge time lag and when it ended I immediately lost game on time.

I have internet access throgh VPN and internet connection is ok while KGS lags, if it helps. (Update: it seems i have short disconnections from my provider too, still problem with missing time)

This problem with missing stone click sound in Java 7 makes playing on KGS for me nearly impossible.

The time issue is lag related -- If the server gets your opponent's move, and sends it to you, but there is a delay between the server and your computer, the server is counting down time before you may realize it's your turn (and your client is still showing that it is counting your opponent's time). Something that won't help the lag issue, but may help you realize that you are starting to have a problem, is to keep the "server stats" window open (File menu -> server stats). This window will display your latency and give you an idea of how much of a delay you are experiencing.
