Weird, the screenshot more or less matches my screen, and I don't think the font is small at all.

It depends on your native resolution. I will be looking to the issue.

+1

I made a thread about this before I realized it was already in this one.

Ideas For Forum Features

Post by apetresc »

I think we should add emoticons for strings like "B1", "W3", etc, to images of the corresponding stone. I just think it's much cooler to see something like:

Image makes life for Black.

And it's very easy to do, so low-hanging fruit :)

Edit: Okay, maybe the icons we'd use would be smaller to match the default font size, but you get my idea.
Edit 2: Aw, crap, this was already suggested in another thread too. Okay, new rule, I'm not posting more until I read everything on LifeIn19x19 so far...

Alright, this would be hard, so, feel free to tell me to go shove it. But this occurred to me a while back when we were talking about the possible impact of google wave on go, and I think it's possible it could be pulled off,

(And I think it would be incredibly useful for the malkovich games)

The idea is this, create an object stored server-side that stores the current state of a game. Limit its access to the person who created it, and any other members that that player adds. (You could also have levels of access, "Open to all for kibitzing, W moves are open to player X, B moves are open to player Y)

The object can then be called from its location by malkovich threads, in order to be commented, displayed, or updated.

Since the server is already storing sgf files, this seems perfectly reasonable. It's mostly setting up member access rights.

EDIT: It also makes it incredibly easy to have a viewing area, where, any time the page is refreshed, it will load the most recent objects
Tactics yes, Tact no...

Back on GD, the title of the webpage (what you see in the top of your screen) was always the name of the thread you were viewing, then followed by "Go Discussions". Here, however, the title of the webpage is always "Life In 19x19" followed by the name of the thread. For anyone like me who keeps many tabs open at once, this makes it harder to keep track of which tabs hold what. I think it would be much more useful if the thread name was the beginning of the title. It would still be just as easy to identify the site - someone would just need to develop a favicon, which are easy to make.

This seems minor, but it shouldn't be too hard to change either. Obviously it's not urgent, but it would be nice to see happen at some point.
We don't know who we are; we don't know where we are.
Each of us woke up one moment and here we were in the darkness.
We're nameless things with no memory; no knowledge of what went before,
No understanding of what is now, no knowledge of what will be.

There is a mark all in forum read button, which can be used for now as i try to gifure out how to make the others work.

The way it works is you click on the foum title name you want to mark read. the mark all read in forum button is in the top right of the blue title bar.
I'm thinking...

A favicon - yes, this would be really useful for me. I know it sounds really silly, but I have manymany tabs open in my browser, and this is just in one of them, and it's much easier to navigate if the tabs are visually identifiable.

It's one of those non-urgent things that might be quick and easy to do, and if so, it would be very nice!

Many thanks.

A suggestion that I don't think anyone has made so far:
What do you guys think about using the layout that Chuck Thomas made for IgoDojo(if he doesn't mind, of course), or something similar?
I thought it looked pretty smooth.

I'm on 1920x1200, and it looked funny being a small column in the middle to me. It had a nice non-phpBB-vanilla feel to it, but I much prefer having the full width that I get here :)

I added a simple favicon. Web browsers are completely idiotic when it comes to caching those for some reason, so you may have to restart your browser before it acknowledges it. Or reinstall it...

I hope to eventually make a custom phpbb3 theme for the site, but I may not find the time. If anyone has web design experience and would like to volunteer, please go right ahead. At the very least, I plan to produce a modified theme that fixes some things like the font in the post editor.

I will say that while it's nice to have a theme like this that can stretch to the size of your browser window, it's much more problematic in a lot of ways than a fixed-width layout for many reasons.

Yes, I've done enough web-work to know how annoying it can be when trying to design a consistent style that works on different resolutions ... however, if it ain't broke and all that :D

Another minor issue which is perplexing me - could submitting a post return you to the updated thread, rather than to a page saying "Your post has been submitted, click here to return to the thread", because the extra clicking makes the forum feel that little bit less slick.

Unless, of course, I'm doing something stupid - I shall now experiment with the buttons and see what "Save" does ...

Save appears, in fact, to save a draft that I can't then find. How deeply intriguing. I'm sure I'm being very stupid; where is the dratted thing hiding?

If you wait a few seconds, then it would automatically redirect you to the updated thread. Older versions of phpbb seemed to give a shorter wait, but newer versions of phpbb seemed to have lengthened this wait.

simpkin, I found that counterintuitive as well... Save looks to me like it would have the same action as post...
Anyway, that draft is in your User Control Page, in "Manage drafts".
