KGS on Ice Cream Sandwich

Post by Kung-Fu Joe »

Installed KGS on my new Galaxy Nexus, and it runs quite beautifully, for the most part. There are only three issues that I've noticed.

1) This is actually an issue I noticed on Android 2.3, as well. If the App loses its connection to the server, it never seems to either time-out or re-establish the connection. I find myself constantly wondering whether my phone has dropped the connection, or whether my opponent is just taking his time while thinking. The only way I've found to confirm that the connection is lost is by sending a Chat message and seeing if it goes through. In the instance the connection HAS been lost, I cannot back out of the program, normally, and have to Force Close, re-open, and load my in-progress game.

2) For some reason, even though there is now more screen real-estate on my phone than on my previous (the original DROID), I no longer see the Recent Chat box appear under my goban while playing. The only way for me to read chat messages, now, is to click the Chat button and scroll, which can be a tad intrusive while playing or observing a game.

3) In some cases, hitting the Back button while in a game (even a completed game) will cause the App to crash. I have mostly noticed this in instances where I had lost connection and re-logged after a force close (see issue 1, above), but have also seen it occur less frequently when I simply hit the Home button, or check a text or e-mail, then return to KGS afterward.

Hope this is helpful. Thanks!

I just downloaded the updated client, the changelog for which lists "Fixes for Ice Cream Sandwich." I'll post my experiences with it, after I get to play around a bit.

I have also experienced symptom #3 on my Galaxy Nexus, even after installing the ICS fix update for the KGS client.

H'mm, I've been using the client on my galaxy nexus fairly heavily and since the ICS fix, haven't seen any trouble with "back" crashing things. Cata, when it dies, please choose "send bug report" or whatever in the dialog. Then I'll be able to see why it crashed.

Unfortunately, I don't see a dialog. My experience is the following:

  1. I'll be watching a game in KGS. While the game is ongoing, I will use the home button to navigate out and do something else for a few minutes (usually browse the web.)
  2. I will tap to return to KGS via either a homescreen icon or the notification area prompt. (Both have exhibited the bug.)
  3. Over the course of about half a second, this happens: instead of returning to KGS, the screen will briefly flash black, and then I will still be on my homescreen, but the KGS icon in the notification area will have disappeared, indicating that the app has closed.
  4. I can tap the KGS icon again to start the app fresh, it logs me in, and everything works.

So I don't see, for example, an "X has stopped unexpectedly" dialog.

My estimation is that this happens about 20% of the time when I try to return to the application. The other 80% of the time, it works fine.

My Nexus is both unlocked and rooted, but I'm using the stock ROM and doing nothing out of the ordinary (I'm waiting for CM9) so I don't think it's probably my fault. I'm on Android 4.0.2.

Let me know if there's any log files with crash information I can dig up for you or anything.
