One thing I've appreciated more as time goes by is that when I think I don't even have to think about a move, I really do. I think bearing that in mind can give you a big improvement.
I'm not talking about responding to an atari, but when I see an obvious response to my opponent's move that makes it look bad. Almost every bad shape has times it's good. And when you look at your opponent's move and think "that's idiotic/a mistake/easy to answer", that's the time you're most likely to be wrong. And it's certainly the time that being wrong is going to hurt you the most.
