KGS Meijin

Post by wms »

We have just announced the KGS Meijin. This is a yearlong tournament to find the best player on KGS; the prize is $500 and a special icon by your name.

More info is at http://www.gokgs.com/tournInfo.jsp?id=671

Finally something for the strongest to aim for!

One question though, why did you choose decenber for the final tournament? Its by far the busiest month for everyone.

Well, we picked December because it's the end of the year, seemed the right time for the last tournament.

But now that you point it out...yeah, maybe not the smartest idea. We'll see how it goes this year, if the timing is a problem we may shift things around for 2013.

It's not really too late to change the system.

yeah you can still change it rather easy, just say that the championship is in january and december is the last month to play a qualifier. then you can name the meijin for 2013 and you can qualify in 2013 for 2014 meijin etc. easy fix:P

We're building up a lot of players for the first qualifier! 72 so far, with ranks from 26k up to two 8d players. Pairing is random so there will probably be some extremely lopsided games in the initial rounds. Hopefully everybody will have fun and the weaker players will treat lopsided games as free lessons. If the stronger players can treat these same games as a free pass onto later rounds, then everybody should be happy. :)

Because there are 5 rounds and all undefeated players qualitfy for the final Meijin tournament, and the TD software pairs winners with winners, we can expect two or three qualifiers if everybody shows up. But anybody who doesn't show up is dropped from the tournament, and usually between 25% and 50% of players are no-shows, so the "real" tournament will have fewer players and fewer qualifiers. Then again, there may still be more people who show up. I'm looking forward to it.

Why did you choose your first KGS Meijin qualifier tournament to start midnight local? :)

It had to start at midnight for somebody! But we intend to have each qualifier start at a different time of day, so hopefully a few of them will work for you.

I might be silly enough to enter one of the qualifiers. But not one that starts at 2 A.M.!

I really wish I can play a stronger opponent, is a good oportunity to play a very strong player.

Agreed. I'll take a loss happily if I end up with a Dan player who doesn't mind reviewing. That's worth more than a win at my level any day.

Well, I fear with games beginning every two hours there may be no time for reviews … at least for the winning player.

But then again I’m not sure I’ve understood the tournament rules completely …
