iPhone software for recording and posting game records?

Post by msgreg »

I'd like to start recording game records on my iPhone then posting them here for review without having to use a computer.

I'm amenable to purchasing SmartGo Pro, which appears to be able to email game records. Anyone know how to take those records and post them to this forum using only the iPhone?

Do you know any other software combination that will allow this?

Thanks!

Can you open the sgf file with a text editor and just copy/paste?

I'm not sure how to do that. iOS isolates each program's data for the most part. There are often the option to open a file in another application (such as "Reader" or "FTPOnTheGo" or "PDFReaderLite") but I'm not sure how that works.

Does SmartGo Pro on the iPhone allow "copy" of the SGF text? If it does, perhaps I can paste into Safari?

Has anyone done this with SmartGo Pro or any other iPhone game recording software?

EasyGo (for iPhone and iPad) allows you to edit the SGF file directly (I have not tried ever, but I saw the option around), SmartGo Pro I think does not, although it may in a future incarnation, currently allows importing by pasting SGF. To paste the SGF with SGP you'd need to send it as email and open in some other app to edit the text, then paste the text here. In any case, cumbersome. I'd rather upload to Dropbox and edit from there.

Thanks!

Just to be clear: what I'm looking for is to enter a game record by clicking on a go board. The software would generate SGF that I could copy then paste into Safari.

In Android it's not hard to open the file in a text editor and copy/paste to here. I figured iOS would have something similar.

iOS doesn't have a traditional file-system. There are mechanisms in place to share files between different apps, but I don't think there's anything that works for this case, and you're stuck with copy-paste.

That's definitely an area where Apple should be trying its best to improve. I think there's a decent case to be made against shoving the file system in users' faces, but the current way of doing things has huge limits.

With PhoneView (for OS X, around US$ 20) you can export all kinds of files created on iPad or iPhone, I just tested this with SGF files created with SmartGo Kifu and IgoWin HD.

There's no need to pay to get the SGF files from your iPhone. With EasyGo or SmartGo kifu alike you can either use iTunes file sharing or send you the SGF file by email.

oren, although iOS devices have *NIX inside, each app works in a sandbox, without real access to the outside file system.

Hyperpape, the "open in" feature is moving this way. EasyGo offers "open in" for SGF files, so I can move from EasyGo to SmartGo Kifu with ease.

So once I have it in email on the iPhone, how do I post it to L19 from the iPhone?

If I can use the "sgf" tag while posting, then copy/paste from there. But which application will let me "copy" the sgf text so I can "paste" it into the Message Body text box on L19 using Safari on the iPhone?

EasyGo can show sgf source, however copy to clipboard is missing in the current version. I'll add it to V1.1, which will be released soon.

For the current version, you can "pretend" to mail the game, then a mail composer window will show up, the sgf source is in the email body, you can manually select and paste. (the sgf file also included as attachment.)

EasyGo just displays the SGF source, no directly editing allowed. "Copy to clipboard" will be added in the next version.
And paste SGF to EasyGo is also missing in the current version, and won't be availabe in next version, I plan to add this in later versions.

SGF is text-based, you should be able to open it with any classic app. Safari for example. Then you can simply copy-paste to here.
As SGF is more or less related to 19x19, the best way to take snapshot would be the he game dev includes this feature in it...

Yes, the new iexplorer 3 is not free. It seems the discontinued iexplorer 2 is still free.
