Join the game where everyone can vote on the next move

Post by gogameguru »

I just thought I'd post this here, even though many of you might've seen it already.

http://long.hivego.info/

This is a 'democratic' turn based game of Go, and while the idea might not be new, I think this implementation of it is. I thought it would be fun if lots people joined in :).

I'm not particularly optimistic about the games, but I'm interested in seeing what happens nonetheless. There are all those sayings like "a committee is as dumb as its dumbest member", "a camel is a horse designed by a committee" and so on. My experience at work has been that those sayings are true and this seems like a fun experiment into the effectiveness of group decision making.

Anyway, maybe we can discuss that, and perhaps discuss the game as well? ;-)

That sounds interesting!

However, there doesn't seem to be any game going on at that site at the moment.

It only displays the board exactly one minute after opening the page in opera, and in FF 10.0.3 it doesn't display the stones(but it does display the board and counts instantly).

Worked fine for me in both Opera 11.62 and FF 11.0.

There's some experience with massive consultation games in Chess, and also in Arimaa. However, without a way to discuss moves, share variations and all that, I can't imagine that this would be that great of an experience.

One such game, "Kasparov vs. The World", is considered an all time great chess game. I'd love to see something similar happen with Go.

I wonder whether "hive go" wouldn't be a cool feature for kaya ;-)

That's because it's the first move, surely? Black have 12 more hours to decide on their first move. 4 votes for resign already...

4 people convinced that the Komi is too high.

There is a "hive go short round" with significantly smaller time limits going on here:

It has several issues in Opera:
1. It takes one minute to display the board
2. It leaks memory, badly. Leave it running for a few hours, and it's consume over a GB
3. It shows the loading animation all the time.

In FF (10.0.3 ESR, i.e. the current long term release) the missing stones are missing from display, but the client knows they're there, since it doesn't let me click there. It shows the counts and the time left.

This seems to be a problem with your configuration, though in my experience, Opera always has memory leak problems if you leave it running for too long. In any case, on my 7 year old laptop the board displays right away without any loading animation. Perhaps you should check your javascript settings. Opera> Settings> Preferences> Advanced> Content.
