Bigger boards?

Post by Pippen »

Would it be a programming problem to push Cgoban to like 52x52 or even 100x100 boards just for the sake of fun to be able to create such monster boards and play once in a while a "monster game"? I'd be really thrilled e.g. to watch bots playing each other on a board like 51x51 or bigger to see what pattern such a big board could create....

It shouldn't be problem to implement this on KGS, but no bot can play on such a big board. 19x19 is a huge challenge for computer go already. And very few human players would welcome such feature, it's long and boring. If you are interested in bigger boards, I'm pretty sure there are many servers that support them already. I believe DGS is one of them and you can probably find some sgfs there if you're interested.

I wonder if the OP has watched (or even played) any 37x37 games on KGS.

Much larger than that, and you'd probably need a zoom feature similar to what some mobile clients use for 19x19 boards. :O

You might also need a week for a single serious game. x.x

Incidentally, a 100x100 board would have 10,000 intersections to play on. So if this were played over the board in real life, each player would presumably start with, oh, around 5000 stones in his bowl

Actually I wouldn't be interested to play serious games on such big boards, but random blitzing moves of bots/humans with 30k-20k to see what kind of fractals you get out of it.

Besides: Wouldn't it be fun to have a 100x100 board (maybe where u can even zoom in) or a circled board or whatever odd shapes just to make the game more interesting? I know that's plenty of work and WMS won't do it, but I wonder if he could easily push the board size from 38x38 to an higher extend from a programming point of view - because sometimes these simple looking changes cost some real programming effort....

What would such a large board look like? Unless one had a large monitor, could one accurately place a stone on such a large board? Could one accurately see the stones? Or is it being suggested scroll bars be added for large boards?
