Hey there (any Dutch players around?)

Post by Fulan »

Completely inexperienced player here. Was turned onto Go by the fighting game community (which is a very Japan oriented video game genre) and I'm very intrigued. I'm reading Go for Beginners by Kaoru Iwamoto and playing 9x9 games against the cpu on my phone to get an idea of how the game works.

I was mainly wondering if there were places where I could learn the game offline? I live in the Netherlands in Utecht and attend school in Amsterdam.

Both Utrecht and Amsterdam have active go clubs.

Utrecht play Mondays and Wednesdays, see http://goclubutrecht.nl/ for details.
The Monday is the more serious, bigger clubnight in a denksportcentrum, the Wednesdays are more casual, played in a bar in the city center.

Amsterdam has all sorts of options, see http://goinamsterdam.nl/speeldagen/ for details.
Amsterdam also have their big Hemelvaart tournament coming up, which is played in the European GO Cultural Centre in Amstelveen.

Both clubs will be more than happy to welcome any newcomer and teach them the rules!

Ah for shame, I'll be in Toulouse, France during Hemelvaart for another kind of tournament.

But thanks for those links. It seems that there are enough places to play offline. Hopefully I can attend soon.

Another question, two friends of mine told me to get an IGS account but it seems most people here have a KGS account. Is one superior to the other? And if so, why?

Both servers are good. For beginners who prefer to play people of similar strength, I'd recommend KGS, because the "beginner class" at IGS is much stronger (comparable to KGS 10k, however the bandwidth at IGS beginner class is very big). If you don't mind getting crushed for the first 50 to 100 games and want to learn faster, then you can also start immediately at IGS.

Then there is also the social component. There is practically no chat on IGS, but on KGS there is. If you'd like to hang out with us L19ers, we have an own room on KGS.
