Well, the Fins are notorious for having ranks that are completely unrelated to other European ranks.

I think go both in Finland and in Vietnam is isolated. In small communities, ranks can do very odd things.

I don't think the Finnish ranks are actually unrepresentative of their European strength. During the Go boom in Finland, there were a lot of sandbaggers, but this has long since been corrected.

South America stands out as being the most out of touch to me, ignoring Azerbaijan's comedy 6 dan.

My impression is that Finns mostly have accurate ranks but low ratings. Eg. during the 2012 Nordic Go Championship I entered as a 1 dan but apparently had a higher Gor rating than every Finnish 2 dan at the tournament.

EDIT: as to the Vietnamese 2 dan, it seems someone of the same name played in the WAGC 2011 and the KPMC 2011 as a 5 dan. Is this the same or a different person?

Don't forget that people enter as their ranks from home, so whilst on paper Juri 5d from Finland's win over Yuan Zhou 7d from USA looks like an upset, it's not really. Sure it's a nice win for him, but I would say his win against Cornel, a high euro 6d, was his best result of the tournament.

P.S Well done Juri! Is that Finland's first top 10 finish? I looked back about 10 years and best I saw was Vesa in 11th in 2006.

We in Finland counted Vesa's 9th place in the WABC 2003 as making into top 10.
