Very calm play by my opponent. No panic yet. Good for him. :)

Let's see how calm he can stay. K16 works well with my 3-5 at C15. K16 also supports my O17 kakari (is that the right term?). I have a tendency to create too many weak groups (regardless of who has what handi) ... let's see if I can avoid that in this game. Only two weak stones left to defend.

I would say that, so far, Black has played well. However, Black has also played to avoid complications, too. That might be to White's advantage, if White can successfully assess the whole board and consistently pick larger moves than Black picks ...

However, as many on the boards here know, I'm not very strong at positional judgment. My main strengths lie in reading and complicated fighting. I've played all my first moves in an attempt to entice my opponent into a fight, where I'm much more likely to come out ahead. Instead, my opponent is not playing my game. This is good for him, because I'm more likely to make a game-defining mistake in a game without much complications. I wonder if my opponent knew that beforehand?

Anyways, since my opponent has selected such a calm path forward, I need to adjust and pull back the baying hounds of war. I'm satisfied with the exchange in the upper right, and now I need to solidify the two lower quadrants.

That doesn't mean I'm not looking at the weak areas in my opponent's formations ... here are some spots on the board that I'm eying for possible future attacks (the marked points aren't necessarily future moves, but weak points in my opponent's structure):

man, i wrote a nice long explaination and it got messed up so now i got to rewrite everything again

ill just give u the shorthand this time

I wanted to play A or C in the dia below, but
that is too soft,
besides 10 is sente and i can come back to defend that area later, as long as i retain sente

b is cool but the timing is not right yet, the open corner has priority

i choose 10 becuase its sente and i dont want him to play there

well thats the shorthand version, gotta go for now see u later :ugeek:

I understand 1986's plan, but moves like :b10: tend to end in gote.

Illuck, I'd thought that, but the simplest variation is ambiguous to me.

After :b3:, I would think that white partially owes a move.

Edited to fix the diagram.

Yes, the precise sequence is hard to find - I'm not sure that the simple move there is best (because C15 by itself doesn't work well with the low stone at C6). But even after the simple move it feels like white can tenuki (or perhaps trade a few forcing moves outside - I still have a lot of trouble in judging whether moves like F16 are aji-keshi).

My preference would be something that tries to shut black inside or removes black's base. Perhaps F16? One issue I think is that white would prefer to play around O3 rather than support C6, but if white plays something like F16 then D10 becomes more important.

Where white is aiming at shapey attacks, like a.

Of course, throwing black into the corner is the other idea, but I don't feel that C6 warrants sacrificing the corner like that.

@Loons:

Yes, the second diagram looks very reasonable once I see it on the board XD

I still feel like C6 doesn't work that well, but probably being able to support O3 first is more important :)

I could have simply defended the corner with C17, I guess. However, this is more likely to allow me to build some influence, which I really would not like to fall behind on.

Since Black has 3 stones on 4-4 points, his corners aren't solid cash quite yet. If I find that I'm falling behind in territory, I can jump into one of the corners for a quick catch up.

A final note: I believe that H17 is a slight overplay. It doesn't make very good shape with the K16/O17 formation; it doesn't fix the weakness at M17.

my move just picked up a nice corner but now its his sente ( its a ok trade a rule of thumb is sente is worth about 15 points (go dojo), i just picked up at least 20 points w/ move #12)

(a) & (c) in my last post would be perfect for white for his next move, but it might not be the right time for him to play there yet because the c15 stone doesn't have a base and that is important, but it would be sente for him to play there because i would have to respond with (d)

Ok, he took the corner as expected. Let's share the bottom left corner now and help out my C6 stone. Here's my plan (keeping it simple):

From there, I'll likely react to whatever he sends my way. The fuseki portion of the game always makes me the most nervous, because I seem to suck at it so badly. I hope I'm not making to much of a mess of things. :blackeye:

Ah, this is more like it. My opponent is giving me choices. The question is ... what do I want to do here? Is it worth pulling my C15 stone out, or should I leave it and take something bigger? How will Black respond?

Here's the board before my move, and the possible moves that jump out at me:

Obviously, taking C3 (c) is a big move. I definitely want to take that. Should I do it now, though? Black's C13 stone ( :b14: ) is looking mighty lonely. It may be possible to induce my opponent to defend that stone, letting me take C3. So, (a) or (b)? (b) seems to be touching a weak stone, which isn't any good here, because all I do is make Black stronger on the left side (possibly in sente), so let's discard that. I want my opponent to spend a move (in gote) to defend C13. Black is also starting to get sealed in to the upper left corner. I don't want to let that advantage slide either.

Another note, my C15 stone has some support up towards H17 and K16, so I'm not just running with no option (did Jowa really mean don't EVER run? :) I find that difficult to digest).

Finally, if I add one more stone to C15, it's still not a huge investment. If E15 (a) is a mistake, I can cut my losses in that area and still likely be ok.

Here's my plan (along with hot spots I'm watching):

either way this is pitiful :blackeye: im pretty sure its workable with sabaki, but its not a fair fight for me because its too many white stones around.

so i gotta keep it simple & try save my two stones, and play my singel stone lightly

so i must play 16, how did i find the move, well elementary my dear (go dojo) sector lines, mixed with a little Yilun Yang "inside weak group!"...."move out!"

example of sector line.

Here goes!

I'm have to admit that I haven't exhaustively read this all out. I've done some reading for a number of lines, but it's not been very deep.

The crux of this move is that I'm looking to separate Black from his most recent move ( G16, :b16: ). This will quickly get complicated, but Black seems to have two options:

1) Black can give White the corner while digging in up top. In many variations, Black's C13 stone is left hanging very close to White thickness.

2) Black can defend his corner. In many of these variations, White gets some good thickness towards the center.

*) Of note, Black can try to keep both the corner and a group near G16 in a few variations. This becomes an even more complicated fight, and I think White ends up with the advantage. It will be interesting if Black chooses one of those very complicated lines.

I don't know if :b16: was the right move to play here, but we'll see what the end result is when the fight ends.
