Re: L19 2011 tournament: PAIRINGS and RESULTS
Phelan fought very strongly after clobbering me in the opening. I managed to cobble together a large framework and defend it to win. Thank you very much for the game, Phelan!
I will look over the game later, but first, lunch!
Someday I want to be strong enough to earn KGS[-].

Re: L19 2011 tournament: PAIRINGS and RESULTS
Thank you too!
I think I made a major mistake by connecting K15 instead of K17 at move 31. That and 35 allowed you to push my group around and get that thickness towards the middle.
I would love to know if stronger players agree with me as to the turning point of the game, or if I could have gotten back after that.
P.S. - I just love playing tournaments, wish I still had more games.

Phelan: I completely agree with your analysis of
. But I think
actually turns the tables a bit. In fact, I think that
was a big mistake, because it allows you to play
. Instead of
, white should just extend at N12. Then black's top group is dead, black's left group is very weak, and black's moyo is also weakened; in short, disaster for black.
After
, white's wall still has a couple of cutting points, so I think the game is still kind of playable for black.

Re: L19 2011 tournament: PAIRINGS and RESULTS
iirc,
is a move that's discussed in "Compendium of Trick Plays". Why I remember this I do not know, but the best way to handle that move is quite simple: suck the base out of both Black groups and play the 3-3.

Re: L19 2011 tournament: PAIRINGS and RESULTS
We played our match just now.
I played a terrible opening and managed to sneak in a kill in the end to make psychee resign. I felt overall really bad about this game, i can play so much better but i just couldnt make it happen.
thanks psychee for the game

Re: L19 2011 tournament: PAIRINGS and RESULTS
Oren and I played. Although I won in the end, my opening seemed slack somehow. At move 38, Araban comments that it seems equal, and I can't say that I am clearly ahead, though I should be as I am ranked several stones higher. Any improvements for black for the first 40 moves or so would be especially appreciated.

On
, did you consider a closer pincer? This is a situation where I would have preferred to block the other way at
, but I think you need support from the pincer stone to make that work. Also, at
, why not double hane?
I'm sure how you played is better, just brainstorming

Yes, I considered it. I was trying to make the Q3/R3 invasion more difficult. Maybe I was trying to get too much with one stone.
jts wrote:This is a situation where I would have preferred to block the other way at, but I think you need support from the pincer stone to make that work.
My thinking was that my C14 stone may well be sacrificed/compromised to support an invasion at C17. But the Q5 stone is not going away. So the bottom seemed better than the left side for long-term large-scale adventures
jts wrote:Also, at, why not double hane?
I didn't like the cross cut at Q6 and extension to R6. It may be inferior for white, but it gives him fighting chances. Whereas with the line I played, black has no weak spots and lots of influence with O8 and P8, while white still has too worry about his group.
Thanks...I'm not.jts wrote:I'm sure how you played is better...

I think playing with the idea that you "should be leading" is a bad idea, even if your several stones stronger. At least for me, this nagging feeling that I should come out ahead of any battle against a weaker opponent is the number 1 reason for losing unnecessarily against weaker players. Sometimes, they just play good moves and 50/50 is OK
BTW, I think
is to blame. I'm pretty sure that move should be a double hane, white can do almost nothing!I'm not sure I like the bottom left result. How about this instead (just an idea):
