I played drunk on KGS last night just for kicks, since I remembered this thread, and already had the prerequisite (being drunk) filled.

I put up free game offers, and indicated that I was drunk. A few people decided to play me.

Maybe my chat is more interesting than my play, but that's probably not that funny, either :-p

Game 1: Random unranked person. Maybe a beginner.

Game 2: Random guest. Maybe he's also a beginner.

Game 3: Game against someone ranked 5k

I've never liked alcohol and I've never been drunk, but when I was a teenager (~15 years ago) I used to play video games stoned out of my head, and the results were pathetic. I can only imagine how sad it would have been if I'd attempted to play Go in that state.

In retrospect, I'm glad I didn't waste my time and money on alcohol, but I wish I hadn't had so many pothead friends. Fortunately I only dabbled with the herb for maybe six months before deciding it was really dumb

I'm not sure how much that affects my game, but I enjoy drinking beer, and I enjoy drinking go, so I don't worry about whether I'm playing as well as I can.

Let us all pause a moment in this acrimonious thread and take careful note: never, ever, ever play Bill using a decent set of stones. He might drink them.

Back when I used to play Bar Billiards a lot - before the fiendish landlord sold the table to someone who exported it to Australia, and I carelessly moved 300 miles away - I established that there was an optimal amount of alcohol (around 3/4th of a pint of cider, or one and a half vodka-and-oranges) which enabled me to play best. I was relaxed enough to not worry about the fact that I was diabolically bad at the game, while still sober enough to not be clumsy.

I have found that something similar applies, to an extent, in Go. I get ... game anxiety. During tournaments especially; I get incredibly tense and shaky. Mostly, I deal with this by walking around and stuff. But at one particular tournament I was sufficiently tense that I went out to look for some aromatherapy to relax me, something smelling of lavender or something. I went into a rather fancy French smelly-things-shop, where they said "And would you like a glass of champagne while you're browsing, madame?" to which I quite naturally said "Why yes, thank you!" (As a sales technique, it worked: I might have bought the stuff I bought there anyway, but the champagne was a definite extra incentive.)

I got back to the venue feeling cheerful and relaxed, and was duly drawn against an eminent professor of cryptography (or something), who was ranked at least two stones stronger than me, and whose 4d son, originally his pupil, had founded my Go club. "Well," I said to myself: "the only way this can end is with me getting a really good lesson. So, relax, have fun, enjoy the game." And I did. And I won. And I won the next two rounds as well. Against people I'd never even hoped to be strong enough to be drawn against, let alone to actually beat.

I don't, per se, advocate drunken Go. But if you're stressed, a gentle dose of a legal relaxing agent, once in a while, is IMO perfectly reasonable. And one day, perhaps I'll be rich enough to order champagne during all my games. :)

Firstly, there's nothing to lose, playing you, except yet another game. :) (The only people who've beaten as many times as you, or more, are people who I've also beaten. But that last loss cost me a whole 2 GoR points.) And secondly, when I'm running a tournament as well as playing in it, I get far less stressed about the possibility of losing. Because, well, if I lose a load of points, it's my own silly fault for trying to do two things at once. And there are other worries to spend the adrenaline on.

I suspect that that's the real key to game anxiety, btw - if your body gets into flight-or-fight mode and you just sit still and try to fight over the board, your body objects to all these flowing endorphins or whatever they are. Walking around, or panicking about who you're going to get to ghost the next round, or making a coffee, gives some kind of release.

Coffee, as a way of relaxing? Clearly, caffeine has no effect on you. =D I'm a wanderer, walking between rounds to burn off adrenaline.
Someday I want to be strong enough to earn KGS[-].

Apologies if this is in the wrong place, or just inappropriate for a post, but we're drunk and very excited. We just made 9d? on KGS on our drunken rengo account. Here's the game..

Nice. But you mean to tell me that a 3D and a 5D missed G8 at move 40?

actually, now that I've sobered a bit, could this thread be moved to the thread "Do you play drunk"? It doesn't really belong here..

Only just seen this thread and I should say that I will play any drunk who comes along. Most people who watch my games know that I rarely play sober.

Best wisbhes.

I've gotta wonder if your closing remark is intentional.
