Do you play drunk?

Post by tj86430 »

I used to sometimes play poker while drunk, but it got too expensive

Now I sometimes play go while drunk, and I have a separate account at KGS for that. Surprisingly, my drunk accounts rank is within one stone of my "regular" accounts rank. Two questions:
- do you ever play when intoxicated?
- if yes, how close to your normal strength are you?

I've never played drunk. I don't normally get myself into that state anyway, but if I do I don't really feel like getting on and playing Go.

Well, I guess the obvious answer is that when I am drunk I am not really sober enough to know whether I am playing go or not.

(I'll leave it up to you to decide how serious a comment that is.   )
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

No, I really am drunk.
So you've got an eye?
That don't impress me much

One clarification: for the purposes of this topic only I'd like to define "drunk" as "having consumed at least two portions of alcohol" (a portion is 4cl of spirits, 12 cl of wine or 33cl of beer or equivalent) - which more or less means not being able to drive legally (of course depending on local laws etc).

I played in the Bonus Tournament held at the Prague 2005 Congress (organized by a bunch of Fins).

It was 10 games blitz (10 minutes sudden death), and I drank half a liter of beer during each game. I think it is quite safe to assume that I was pretty drunk during the 10th game :D

How did you do? (and I hope they were Finns and not fins ;-))

I have never played go in Finland. But judging from the Finns I know, you were probably the most sober, by a large margin.

I won the first 6 rounds, and the 8th :)

With 7/10 and 11 pints of beer (which scored 0.7 points each) I came third in the tournament. The winner was a Russian 2 dan who won 6/10 and drank 17 pints...

My girlfriend tells me (I don't remember) that my final game was very funny to watch, as both me and my opponent were having a hard time even putting the stones on the intersections, let alone the right ones :)

It's hardly believable :)

That hardly qualifies as drunk. 12cl of wine is less than one glass.

12cl of wine contains about as much alcohol as 4cl of spirits, and is a definition of a portion, at least in Finland. The normal measures in restaurants here are 12cl, 16cl and 24 cl, so 12cl is a glass (albeit small). However, I wanted to define "drunk" somehow for the purpose of this thread, and that's my definition. Being over 110kg myself I can drink 2x12cl of wine and still legally drive (according to Finnish laws), but I know that many/most people can't.

I wouldn't qualify someone after 2 drinks as "drunk", but as "tipsy". I think you would need to have a B.A.C. of at least 0.05 top qualify as "drunk" :)

Fine, change "drunk" in my OP to "tipsy" then. I just wanted to explain what I meant. Furthermore, I'm not sure what B.A.C > 0.05 means, but if it means what I think it means, then two drinks makes most people drunk.

B.A.C is blood alcohol content, for a table of body weight vs drinks per hour needed to reach certain B.A.C, see something like http://www.ci.detroit-lakes.mn.us/publi ... chart1.gif
