looking for go players in Carlisle/Dumfries/Tyneside area

Post by Tami »

Do any of you good people live in the North West of England or South West of Scotland? I live in Carlisle and would like to play go in the real world again. I often go to Newcastle to do research, too, so would think about going there to play.

Thanks!

Have you asked the British Go Association?

Sorry, can't help you.
I visited Carlisle some years ago. Nice town (went to the place/pub where people could marry; can't remember the name, married later though), beautiful area.
I hope to visit Carlisle/Newcastle area during next year's summer holiday. Would be great to meet English and/or Scottish go players.

The BGA is willing to play over-the-board games?
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Not sure if you are making a joke or suggesting that mumps implied the BGA was a person, but one of the services the BGA provides is putting players in contact with others near them, which could be useful to Tami. Also it's a shame she didn't ask earlier as Kim Youngsam 7d was studying in Newcastle for a while, and Oh Chimin 7d in Durham I think, and the excellent Durham tournament happened recently. The Northern tournament is in Manchester this weekend.

I've sent an enquiry to the BGA. That was a good suggestion, thanks.

The Scottish town Sybob is thinking of is Gretna. I've only been through it on my way to Dumfries and other places, so can't say much about it. There is, though, quite a bit of interesting history in the region, and not just to do with elopements, such as the WWI munitions factory and museum.

Anyway, on the off chance anyone reading this swings by Carlisle, do drop me a message and perhaps we can get together. It'd be nice to play go the old-fashioned way again!
