Interesting endgame tesuji

Post by DrStraw »

Here is an interesting tesuji which just came up in one of my games. I would expect any dan player to see it but kyu players may miss it. It is the endgame with only small points left and it is white to play. The obvious move is a but that is not what I played. Given the clue most kyu players will also find it, but how many would do so in a game?

Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

If W pushes directly, W gives B the choice to tenuki or to block and keep the 3 points.
If B tenukis (and gains elsewhere), W pushes again and gets the same local shape as the wedge.
It seems locally, there's no reason for W to play the push. ( Or is there? )

I would like to think I would read out the wedge correctly in the game, but I am confident that I would get the timing wrong because it's gote.
