Hello, can someone please help reading the writing on this Sakata's fan? My Japanese is not at this level... Hoping it's understandable given the pic.
Thanks!

Can you please put the image in hide tags? I’m sure some users will be thankful :-)

It is yugen 幽玄, meaning quiet beauty, elegant simplicity, subtle and profound. This is the caviar among words in Japanese and Chinese - so many delicate nuances, including also deep and far, and the silence of the mountains. The most famous playing room in the Nihon Ki-in is called the Yugen Room.

This particular fan was brushed for the 20th Amateur World Championship in Tokyo in 1998.

On the left is the name Sakata Eio with two seal blocks of his name, and another on the right (using more than one is a way of establishing copyright).

The most famous Sakata fan here though is Dr Straw :)

I forget if they mentioned this room, 幽玄の間 yūgen no ma, in HNG.
The room is quite nice, but being in a high rise building in Tokyo (3rd floor ? 5th?), it's not very big.

A random online photo of a visitor in the room:

( The bottom two kanjis of Mr. Kawabata's calligraphy on the wall are the same 幽玄 yūgen. )

The Nihon Kiin has a website (and Go client?) with the same name .

Nice to know Mr. Sakata (Kawabara Sensei's character in HNG was inspired by him) was one of the disappearing breed of Go pros who actually practiced calligraphy. His was quite nice on the fan.

Hi Kaliya,

To put an image inside Hide tags:
1. "Choose File"
2. "Add the file"
3. "Place inline"

Then put the attachment text inside Hide tags.
Please see post #5 for an example.
