What was your shortest game?

Post by FakeDeath »

As far as I can remember my shortest game on 19x19 board was played a few months ago in Insei League. My kgs level is around 1 kyu and I played even game against kgs 4 dan player. I resigned just after 25 moves! If you read Kogo joseki dictionary you should have came across mistakes in joseki after which the game suddenly gets over. Here is a classical example of complex joseki involving ladder.

Here is another example of very early resign, a game between Bigbadwolf 9d and Mortician 9d, posted on gosensations http://gosensations.com/index.php?id=2& ... new_id=752

What was your shortest game? Was it a result of mistake in joseki or misread in early fighting?

I had a game yesterday that was one move. My opponent played C1, and I asked if it was a misclick. He said yes, so I told him to undo. After a few minutes of waiting, I closed the game.

But seriously, I've had games end at less than 50 moves when a group died. I used to resign early when I really messed up a big corner or something, but I don't any more. I still meet players who do, occasionally.

I think my shortest game was one move. I clicked my first move and the other guy said he had to go do something. So he resigned before his first move.

My shortest game was actually very recently.

I activated Automatch and got an opponent ... who immediately escaped, giving me the win before move 1 ... and bumping my rank up (temporarily) to 3k! LOL.

That rank jump did not feel earned, so I went and promptly played more games and am back down to 4k, but I'm approaching that arbitrary KGS line again!

I think my shortest game was one move. I clicked my first move and the other guy said he had to go do something. So he resigned before his first move.

Something similar happened to me last week. I got black in an automatch game against a 2k. I played my first move and my opponent did nothing. No move, not even a simple "hi".
After looking at his game list, i think he did this many times. He had lost quite some games by escaping but often he also lost on time, or his opponent simply resigned/left.
It didn't felt right to give this sort of guy a win by resigning and i didn't wanted to have an unfinished game in my list, so i browsed this board while his time ticked down.

Funny thing he started another automatch game a few minutes after our "game", where his opponent left because he didn't made any move.

I wonder.. is'nt this sort of behaivor against the KGS TOS? (As automatch games are rated even if no moves are made)
-------------------
Shortest normal game would be something around 60 or 70 moves i think. I can't remember any exact game, but i know i had some, where after this amount of moves i had lost a fight this big, that i clearly lost by that point.

Edit:
Found one, 76 moves. I messed up a corner fight pretty bad and resigned.

I've had a similar experience. My automatch settings are to play quick games only. When I got automatched, my opponent asked to play a longer game, which I declined. He escaped. I got automatched three more times against him, and he forfeited them all.

Does that apply to both players, if only one has chosen automatch? I never use automatch, but I get a lot of players who do use it challenging me.

Eh? You can only get an automatch game if you activate it yourself. Normal challenges in rooms are not automatch.
Easy way to know: Automatch games have a 10 second-countdown before the game begins (but the game is counted as soon as the countdown starts).

Ok, when I post a game, I say +/- 1 stone, no guests. Yet I get plenty of people challenging me who do not meet those requirements. I thought it was because they were getting my posted game via automatch. So they're not? They're just stupid (or can't read)?

neither of those, they probably hope you're not too strict about this.

You are correct, people are just challenging you without caring about what you have written in the game note.

I had one that was 22 moves. I resigned because I really messed up trying to punish a move my opponent played (he did not follow joseki at all!). I feel worse for him though, because the next time he tries that, someone might actually respond correctly. Of course, I was supposed to know how to punish it... just wasn't thinking.

I have had a bunch of games where my opponent just left without reason.
Yesterday I won like this on W-Baduk after 1 move... But those do not count.

I have won a couple dozen games within 25 moves. Most with the joseki below.
I'm always amazed that people up to 2d miss the ladder.

Don't be so hard on yourself. Some joseki deviations are insanely hard to correctly refute, and even if you manage are only worth an extra 2 points or so than joseki. Don't try too hard to punish something just because it isn't joseki - play the board, not the book ;)
