Beech Veneer Board

Post by zac »

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with beech veneer boards,
I'm looking at this one; https://www.schaakengo.nl/goshop-keima/ ... 6-cm-thick
I'm not expecting it to last forever, but to be a nicer board than my current MDF one, which has served me well, and to last for maybe the next 5 years or so until I can purchase my dream set (size 20 kaya, bowls, slate and shell from kurokigoishiten).
I like the idea of having a thicker board (current one is 2cm), as I often sit on my lounge room floor to study, and from the photos the veneer I think looks quite nice. The bonus is that I can order a few books along with the board, and the shipping charge doesn't change. I would have considered a size 10 shin kaya from kurokigoishiten as my intermediate board, but the postage costs are a bit of a deal breaker. And the extra cost might make me delay in purchasing a really nice set.

Thanks to anyone that can give me any insight to how a beech veneer board looks, feels, lasts etc.

Hi zac,

Looks nice. Both the beech and kuroki boards will last multiple lifetimes, with good care. :)

One of my boards is a folding beech veneer board with magnetic hinge and 13x13 on the other side from Hebsacker Verlag in Germany for 20+ years, and it is awesome, even though it has taken some beating (e.g. a few dents at the edges) because I’ve carried it to many places.

Here’s an image of it:

First I couldn’t believe it’s veneer, but then I found the “Extra informatie” where it says “Beuken fineer”.
(But I don't understand why it first says 3.6 cm, and later it’s 3 cm. Anyway, looks like it’s the same as this one in Hebsacker’s new shop, and there it’s 36 mm; also check out the photos there.)

It looks really nice … I’d think you’ll be happy with it.

Thanks guys,

Nice to see some other photos, looks like it'll do the job!
Also ordered a couple of books, Joseki Compass, because I've enjoyed the Jump Level Up books so much, and The Meijins Retirement Game, having recently read The Master of Go. Crazy how cheap the shipping was, compared to from the USA, Japan or China. Especially the latter two, given that I'm in the Asia-Pacific region. Now anxiously waiting for it to arrive...
