Green stones for variations
Query: has anyone tried green (or purple fluorescent, if it suits you) stones for variations? Do they help or the change in color is way too offputing?
Thanks. Take care

IMX, the change in numbering (starting the variations with number 1) has been sufficient to tell variations from the game record.

Hi Ferran,
Interesting question. On a viewer with a tree window, the branch is enough visual cue for me.
However, if a tree view is not available ( and I don't like to see move numbers when replaying in software ),
I wonder if a slightly different shade of
and
may work ?
( Say the regular
is 0% and
is 100%; maybe a 20% dark grey and an 80% light grey ? )
Not green, or any other RBG colors, please ( the bots have already taken shades of red and green for winrates!

You mean on a board or on a screen?
I’ve played with M&Ms, pennies, Mentos, and even steel and brass hex nuts so I’m not out off in the least by colors or shapes.

Board. I didn't realize it could be taken the other way, sorry.
Take care

Back in the days when I was teaching beginners, variations were almost meaningless for them; way too complex. But we’d try to work through them on 13x13 boards using punchout cardboard go stones. They were black and white because they cam that way from the AGA but we eventually used markers to number them. Just my opinion, of course, but variations on a physical board can only progress 15-20 stones and then it’s just too confusing for most of us. Whatever method you come up with, you only need about forty items. If they’re cheap enough, you can mark them.

Traffic here at Life19 is 90% online playing and go apps. Nice to get a post from someone else in the physical board section.

Re: Green stones for variations
Playing out variations with stones of only one color is a fun exercise.
Easier than you might think.

I play online, it's basically the only way I can. Maybe in a couple of years I might be able to do it otherwise, but I haven't had luck so far. However, Go is a board game, not a video game. All sorts of assumptions come from that. And, frankly, putting B&W pixels on a screen does not give me the same understanding of what I just did.
Take care.

Re: Green stones for variations
Sorry, I've been busy and I just saw this.bogiesan wrote:Did you ever find these green stones you were looking for? They are readily available at may online sources. Jang makes them.
Yes, I found them, thanks. Got them from a European e-seller who's not going to see me again. Rant here [*].
Regarding the stones, I've found the dark ones fit the original intent, but the pale ones are still too coloured and distract me. Also the slight difference in thickness (1 mm, if I recall it right) is impressively noticeable. YMMV.
Thanks for checking. Take care.
[*] Several of the pale green stones arrived chipped, and while I didn't have a need for a replacement (2 out of 180 is not that bad), the way they dismissed the information ["Thanks for the info; detritus happens", basically] was... well, for starters, I suspect that it's illegal under EU trade / consumer protection law. Not going to hire a lawyer for that, but I'm not buying from them again, either.
Frankly, the only online go stores I've had luck with are Kuroki and schaakengo.nl. But the only one I haven't yet mentioned was a German store that closed sometime in the... mid 00s? Those has a quite good customer complaints reaction, but a horrendous packager (the first package arrived bashed and with "almost sente" firmly *taped* to the board. The replacement package... arrived in two pieces.)

Re: Green stones for variations
Ferran, thanks for closing the thread. If you're still after colored stones, 6 Bros in Korea offers glass and plastic in several colors. And, of course, jade.
