Eunbyul 2010 - is it really this strong?

Post by pete0877 »

So what do you folks think of this:

http://www.koreaittimes.com/story/12367 ... o-software

"Eunbyul 2010 (...) developed by North Korea (...) winner of the third Computer Go Competition UED Cup in 2009 (...) is maintaining 3-dan at cyberoro.com and also ranks number one in sales in Japanese computer Go program market"

I have not heard of "Computer Go Competition UED Cup" nor can I find it on any of the sources I consider reliable (this forum, SL and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Go ).

Seriously? That strong? Without any super-computers to back it up? Has anybody tried the commercial version of this software (apparently available in S. Korea and Japan)?

This I find a bit of a strange statement:

"Along with their passion for the game, North Korea is also regarded as one of the world's best developer of computer Go game."

I am questioning correctness of this article. Would be great if they could quote some sources and provide some links.

Korea IT Times is based out of Seoul, South Korea and seems to enjoy fair amount of popularity. On Wikipedia it says they have 150k visitors per month (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Korea_IT_Times)

I found this page:

http://senseis.xmp.net/?SilverStar

Also, on this page:

http://computer-go.info/events/index.html#2009

you can see a program called KCC Igo listed as the winner of the UEC Cup. UEC to UED seems a likely mistake.

Note that on the latter page the link to the results of the 2009 tournament actually links to the results from 2010. I couldn't find the tournament table for 2009 with a quick search.
