Bug opening KGS games

Post by Joaz Banbeck »

I log in to KGS, go to the English room, double click on a game, and nothing happens. I do not get a new window. ( It is not a hardware problem: I can successfully double-click or single-click on other things in other programs )
New windows can appear for other reasons: if I let it sit for 10 minutes, I get the warning window.

I decided to ask for advice using the chat feature. I put a cursor on the field at the bottom, type my question, and press return. The text disappears. It does not appear in the ongoing conversation.

Does anyone know what is wrong and how to fix it?

EDIT: It is not account specific. I tried my 'test weird ideas' account. That has the same problems.

EDIT2: It is the same with both IE and firefox.

EDIT3: I can right-click on a game, and I get a 4-option menu. I left click on the first option, 'join game'. No new window opens.

EDIT4: If you are on KGS around 4:00 pacific time today, and I am not there, please tell CSamurai that I am having problems.

Interesting. If you are using the Webstart client, the usual quick fix for a lot of things is simply clear your java cache / delete the jar file and redownload it. If it is with the applet that wouldn't be an option, but in that case it may be an issue with Java, and reinstalling Java may help (if you recently updated Java, it may be worth reverting to the old version.)

A potentially unrelated thing but just a thought -- Some of your problems actually sound lag /packet-loss related. A number of the actions you were having trouble with on KGS were things that aside from the connection would require a server response. Can you open File-> server stats and check your ping? or is that not working too?

Thanks. Can you put this in simpler terms for an old programer whose idea of a modern language is fortran4 and a modern OS is CPM? Exactly how does one clear a cache? And where is the JAR file? ( Using XP, FWIW )

Hey guys. Sorry to hear about the java fail.

We'll try again in a week. I look forward to our game.

Sorry for not being more clear. It was a bit of a brainstorm/"shotgun troubleshooting" reply before walking out the door....Luckily however:

This is exactly what I was referring to when I said "clear the cache / delete the jar."

Hopefully this fixes your problem!
