In praise of drunkenness?

Post by Uberdude »

The game below is a recent game of mine from OGS. At two key points in the game (moves 79 and 105) I was feeling rather depressed with how the game was going, and coupled with playing moves after getting back from the pub I went a bit crazy and played some rather risky trades that I would usually not have the confidence to make, giving up what I had previously considered "my" territory (the lower right corner for 79, and the lower side territory for 105). They seemed to work out pretty awesomely for me, with the 2nd trade resulting in a 3-way attack which ended with killing one of the groups. Flexibility in Go is one of those things I think I (and pretty much everyone else too, except maybe Go Seigen) need to improve and it seems the lowering of risk-aversion of alcohol helped me here.

P.S not that the drunken-fist strategy always works, there are other OGS games of mine where drunk moves have ruined a good game ;-)

Just something I noticed flipping through the game:

Maybe 50 at J10? Threaten some nonsense on the left and strengthen the top while you're at it

EDIT:

Also, I think E10 was right, if E11, you can push through the 1-space jump.
Tactics yes, Tact no...

I think replaying Lee Sedol games might be affecting my Go. Previous game had an even bigger kill :D http://www.online-go.com/games/board.php?boardID=317813

Yeah looks decent. But then most things will in comparison to m16! Then if white m16 n15 and fight? Though I do wonder if my mistake was earlier and how I just played joseki answers to the r14 approach through lack of imagination which forced white to run into the centre. Maybe this was a time I should have used my central stones to enclose centre territory. I think if white played better (e.g. defending at s11 at some point and keeping the top right corner life in reserve) j12 could quite easily have ended up a useless stone.
