Weiqi Study Experience China?

Post by sholvar »

Did anyone here go to China to study Go seriously (seriously = at least 6 hours per day for at least 5 days a week, all together 3 months or more)? Where did you go? Did they speak English or Chinese? How strong have you been before? How much stronger are you afterwards? Do you think it was worth the investment of your time and money? It's okay, if you tell your stories about Korea, Japan or other places, too. But about China I care the most and until now I only know stories from people going to Korea. I don't know if there even are any real Go schools for grown ups (beside the offer on Guo Juans website).

I have not been to China yet to study, but i will be going to China this summer. 3 months of full time study either at Wuhan or Guiyang or both.
I'll be writing about my experience here.

There is a well known summer study program in Beijing that has been running for at least 4 years now, led by a group of Chinese professionals and taught completely in English. I believe there are several options, but it is intensive group study, 5-6 days per week. Milanmilan and smartrobot on KGS are both involved in the program and will answer your questions if you PM them.

I have been living in Beijing for 5 years and know many people who have come over for the trip, although I have not participated myself (I might join this year on an ad hoc basis as I should have some time off.) If you would like, I could put you in touch privately with several people who have participated and can tell you more.

I don't think that you necessarily have to go to a special go school for adults or foreigners. Every province in China has a go center, and I'm sure they would happily accept foreigners as long as you speak some Chinese. I'm going to the Guiyang go school. I know someone that lives around there. They don't have a special program for foreigners though.

The website is http://www.experience-go.com/. As you will see, it's temporarily down but I PM'd smartrobot about it last week and he told me they will fix the issue asap but it requires Milanmilan and he was away at the time of asking. Should be up again soon I would think.

In the meantime, just PM either of those two directly for details.
