How many posts per page do you see?

In an attempt to decrease the effects of server lag that we have been experiencing recently, I've changed the global 'posts per page' setting. Sometimes it affects people, sometimes it doesn't. So I'm doing some research to try to determine exactly how it does that - or fails to do it.

If you changed your individual 'posts per page' setting, please state when you did it and to what value.

If you have joined in the last two months, please note that also in your post.

I haven't seen any lag in a couple of weeks myself -- but for a while, it used to be every weekend

my guess is that its only indirectly related to the number of posts per page, as it may take a long time for the server to fetch the data from the database to generate the page.

my guess would be that its the load on the database (and perhaps locked tables with simultaneous requests) -- especially if its a shared db with other applications on the host. (and the load would naturally increase if the user is requesting more posts per page -- and if those posts have a lot of diagrams, etc.)

my limited experience with databases, mysql doesn't have very good tools for diagnosing such issues. but a dba should be able to help.

if the host is a VM, maybe its overallocated (or underallowcated) on its vCPUs and vRAM.

if the database is on a different host from the php server, and especially if its a different network segment, then there could be db latency issues. you'd need a networking expert to help there.

all issues we've been dealing with at work for a while, but not my level of expertise.

I set my posts per page to 40 a very long time ago. I haven't seen much lag recently, but a couple of weeks ago the forums were unvisitable.

usually no.
few times i had problems...but i visit later when problem is gone.

I clicked the wrong button in the poll. My actual setting is "20", not "more than 20 and I never touched it."

First thing I always do when I register at a forum is to set post count on threads to maximum. DSL, fast reading (words, not Go ;-)

) and a slight impatience are the reasons, I just don’t like having to wait <shrug>

But a week ago (perhaps one and a half) I reduced this number to 20, in an attempt to find out whether this would alleviate the frequent connection problems I encountered here (and only here). Seems to have helped!

20 but as from the Feedback threads I've been having a lot of issues on and off with connecting to the site and with slowdowns when loading.

I am unable to give a meaningful answer about the performance of any website looked at from here at home. This is a rural location so access is via a 28,8 KBaud phone line.

I got the timeout on multipage threads again today.
I immediately went into my preferences and changed the number of post I see to 20. Then I could see the thread. Then I changed it back to a higher number (30 in my case), and I could still see the thread, but not any other multipage thread that I haven't viewed yet today.
