I am working on the following game chart:
http://www.go4go.net/go/tournaments/sco ... 37-13-s33c
I have reason to believe the 2nd round opponent of Cho Chikun was Koyama Yasuo (小山靖男). However several other sources suggest a different player Koyama Shizuo (小山镇男). As you can see the two characters are different but probably not that different for western speakers.
Can anyone help me to check this? I am particularly interested in the records in the 1998 Japanese yearbook, which I don't have.
help verify game information please

Thanks for checking this for me. How did you reach your conclusion?

Actually if the rank is correct, it has to be Koyama Yasuo since Koyama Shizuo never got to 9d.
Mainly I thought the question was just on pronunciation. I didn't see they were two different players until just checking on GoGoD now.

I have a book with a game table of this event showing characters '小山靖男'. While the Chinese book is not necessarily more reliable than GoGoD, the Chinese author only needed to copy the characters from his Japanese source - less chance to get anything wrong in translation.oren wrote:And GoGod says it's Koyama Shizuo 6d vs Cho Chikun 9d...
I just found another good argument supporting my version. gobase.org shows that the round 1 game between this Koyama and Tsuchida Masamitsu was played at Osaka (Kansai Kiin). Tsuchida Masamitsu is affiliated with Nihonkiin Chubu and Koyama Shizuo is based in Tokyo. Why on earth these two needed to travel to Osaka to play the game? On the other hand, Koyama Yasuo is an Kansai Kiin player, which explains the game location much better.
Any way, it is still good to know what the original Japanese source says about this.

Yeah, the mystery is interesting. I would also probably go with Yasuo as a guess. Unfortunately official details from 1987 are not that easy to find.macelee wrote: Any way, it is still good to know what the original Japanese source says about this.

It's very strange since it's the kanji for Yasuo, but the sgf content all say Shizuo.

I think there is only a single western source: JBvR (and all other western sources are copies). An independent source is http://web2go.board19.com/gopro/go_view.php?id=2941macelee wrote:I have reason to believe the 2nd round opponent of Cho Chikun was Koyama Yasuo (小山靖男). (You do not specify KM?)

I guess some people here will disagree. But that is another topic. Thanks for the link, I am now pretty confident that go4go's version is correct.vier wrote: I think there is only a single western source: JBvR (and all other western sources are copies).
