Re: 21-02-2017: Can't login to KGS.

I'm also having problems logging in. I found another thread that pointed directly to the Jar (http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jar) and I'm able to log in if I download and run that file. But if I try to us the cgoban.jnlp file it just tells me that it's unable to load.

Re: How to win a fight that you "should" win?

So what I'm taking away from all of that is that I shouldn't double hane. LOL!

Not really. All you can generalize from this is that you shouldn't double hane without looking. I was trying to jokingly say that it was beyond my skill to read out all your variations, and thus, I couldn't safely hane ...

How to win a fight that you "should" win?

You know the fights that you "should" win? The ones where your opponent cuts you and your group will have an extra liberty over the cutting group, so you should theoretically be able to capture the cutting stone? Whenever I get into those situations, somehow they manage to wiggle and get extra ...

they want to know why other real people start playing such an "obscured game"

Me: That is a very interesting question... but wait, you play Chess do you not?

Friend: Yes, I do!

Me: But many more children play Monopoly than Chess. Why did you ever learn the more obscure game?

Friend: Chess isn ...

Re: Why is the diagonal of a square not "2"

Think of a triangle as two different routes of getting from A to B.

$$B

$$ | . . . . S |
$$ | . . . . S |

It's true that B is four steps to the right of A and four steps above A. But if you take 4 steps to ...

There is a Go club in Northampton, MA. Not exactly close, but closer than New York. :)

Re: continuing a game after being disconnected from IGS

I've been playing on my ipad using Tengen Go. When I lose connectivity I often can't get back to a game. Sometimes it will prompt me to resume a game but there seems to be no way to do it. It does have a terminal access so I can use system commands. And I've tried 'stored' but it doesn't seem that ...

Re: Beginner issues - how to improve?

The way I've always interpreted the saying "Lose your first 100 games quickly" was that as a new player you really have no idea what you are doing. So you sit there and agonize over whether you should play x or y. But the truth is usually that you just don't have enough experience to know which is ...

Re: Games decided by one large group

If the life and death that decides the game is usually one of your groups, then I'd suggest that maybe you need to make moves that make your groups safer.

This is advice I really don't like to see. You need to read if the group needs to be safer and what forcing moves are given to an opponent ...

Re: Games decided by one large group

Do you find that most of your games are decided by the life or death of one large group?

I find this to be the case in the majority of my games.

Any thoughts on what this means?

If the life and death that decides the game is usually one of your groups, then I'd suggest that maybe you need to ...

Re: Walls and influence in a nutshell

I would say that you have to completely erase from your mind the idea that this huge outer wall is an attempt to make territory. It's not! It's used to strengthen your ability to attack opponents elsewhere on the board, and in turn, make territory elsewhere.
But it does that partially through the ...

Re: ? about reading and visualization

Most of the time it's sufficient to look at the "zig-zag" without visualizing the stones. Occasionally though when there are stones that are close it's not entirely clear that they are a ladder breaker until you visualize the stones. Everyone has probably misread a ladder and belatedly realizing ...
