Well, I already know what I did wrong. Just a small mix up in the order of moves (one wrong order can destroy everything). Connect before cut is all. But if you would like to be amused:

My shortest game (by # of moves) was at the first round of the US Open this year. I played one move. My opponent never answered.

Probably because she had, as it turned out, never left Japan.

You can set your automatch preferences to be just that: +/- 1 stone, no guests
Then you'll only get those players, and no random challenges.

So why do I get seemingly random challenges when I don't have automatch on? And in some cases, the people keep coming back, a few seconds later, as if it were automatic...

There's no IQ or manners test required to play on KGS.

Actually, I think you're off - if you play this hane and connect, you should clamp, not cut. The cut punishment starts with a descent (S3 instead of S4.) Both of those variations can be proper depending on the situation.

EDIT: just looked at your variation - after your hane and connect, if you cut (variation 1) I believe white can punish by atari first from P5 then extend. Big fight on the outside, but black shouldn't be able to fight effectively as he needs to come back and live in the corner.

Automatch and the non-auto games are completely different, entirely separate.

If you set automatch, it will pair you up according to your settings with someone else whose settings make them an appropriate match. (That is, they fit your grade settings and you fit theirs, and you have both said the same time settings.)

If you set up a game, anyone can, and often does, challenge you. Irrespective of the things you say in the note, which they may or may not be unable to read (languages, etc), and which are in no way "fixed". I have no idea what is going through the minds of people who repeat requests, but it is not actually automatic.
