I have, but I don't plan on making a habit of it.

(1) Alcohol reduces my attention span to somewhere near zero seconds.

(2) Alcohol makes me sleepy.

(3) Drunk Go has resulted in a few chipped stones from my... exuberant overplays.

I don't remember if I've posted this before, but the Big Brother Rengo format seems ideal for a drinking game. 4-6 players of different skill levels. The low-ranked players play as long as the higher-ranked players approve their moves. To correct a move the 'older brother (or sister)' must drink a certain amount... as must everyone else on his/her team. Seems like it could be interesting, depending on the players involved. And this way, you don't have to worry about game balance, disparities in intestinal fortitude aside.
Someday I want to be strong enough to earn KGS[-].

Now I sometimes play go while drunk, and I have a separate account at KGS for that. Surprisingly, my drunk accounts rank is within one stone of my "regular" accounts rank. Two questions:
- do you ever play when intoxicated?
- if yes, how close to your normal strength are you?

1) Often, lol.
I usually play 'impaired' in one way or another... drunk sometimes, extremely tired mostly, while doing some other stuff, very often, and so on... usually its a combination of things... But I enjoy it like that... it sort-of takes away the whole rank-chasing and fear of losing. I actually find it relaxing - fun without stress.

2) Strength - hard to tell, since I do not have the chance to play seriously very often. I would like to think that in a serious face-to-face game I would be around KGS 5d or better. In 'drunk' games I oscillate between KGS 2d and KGS 4d. It might depend on how drunk my opponents are as well, lol.

I think the strength difference varies with your 'style'... if your game is heavily influenced by deep reading then being drunk will really hit you hard! On the other hand, if your game depends more on intuition and 'feel' for what is right and what is not, then being drunk might not have such profound effects. This is the case with me.

Of course, once you get really blasted all bets are off, and I have seen my games looking like 20k was playing. ;)

I only drink for medical reasons.

No joke. I'm currently dealing with some bizarre neurological symptoms ( most of which seem to be false alarms, fortunately ). The neurologist that I am seeing asked if certain symptoms were increased by drinking. I had to tell him that I didn't know. He said get drunk so that you do know, and then tell me. It is apparently a standard diagnostic tool when distinguishing between the causes of certain types of headaches.

As a side note, I'm not opposed to drinking on any moral or religious grounds. I just don't like the 'down' effects of other neural depressants that I have taken for medical reasons, such as muscle relaxants, cold medicine, and morphine. I felt like a zombie on morphine. I hated it.
I don't like the taste of alcohol either. To me, wine tastes like spoiled grape juice. I remember once taking a sip of an allegedly fine wine that my wife was buying at 65 USD per glass. I would have thrown it out, just on the taste alone. My wife tells me that I'm a philistine. I counter that my judgement can't be too bad: after all, I chose her.

Anyway, after more than half a century of sobriety, it was time for me to get drunk. My long suffering wife, in a charitable attempt to make it palatable, fixed something called a 'mudslide' for me. It is essentially a chocolate milkshake with booze added. I drank it over the course of half an hour. I was not falling-down drunk, but I did have to take care when walking past furniture, for a I had a tendency to bump into it if I did not consciously make an effort to avoid it.

As readers of my past posts may have observed, I am keenly interested in how we think when playing go. Being drunk was an opportunity not to be missed. In the name of science, I logged on to KGS. My primary account had not been used for several months, due to the aforementioned medical isues. It had floated to 4D[?]. I figured that it was time to bring it back in line.

The game below is about 3 ounces of ethanol in a 230 pound person.

As any philosopher of science can tell you, for an experiment to have any validity, it must be repeatable. Another mudslide was sacrificed for science. The results were equally dismal:

In the end, I'd still choose my wife, even if she did ruin two perfectly good chocolate milkshakes.

It's actually fairly common, that someone who isn't used to different wines would rather drink cheap wine than expensive (fine) wine, especially if it's red wine.

Hmm, all that tells me is that I never want to get used to different wines...

This is primarily an effect of people not really liking the taste of wine, which is fine. Blind taste-tests have shown that many people, even people who claim to be wine connoisseurs, strongly prefer wine which has a sugar content that masks its taste. (Which is true of many different strong flavors - some people generally like it, other people prefer it to be masked.) If you don't like wine, though, it's better not to drink wine at all; if you like wine, why not drink the good stuff, when affordable? Seems like a silly reason to hope that you continue to dislike something.

And about your wife's 65$ glass of wine, Joaz: sometime aged wines really do go bad. Did it taste a lot like vinegar, you mean? I would hope she would know the difference.

No. It tasted like it had been left on the shelf too long and had fermented.

I was joking. I have an unfortunate (for my wallet) preference for nice whiskies though I rarely drink alcohol these days due to it not mixing well with my medication. I believe there are similar double blind test results with whiskey but the placebo effect is pleasant in this instance so, eh, it's my money etc. Oh and yes, I wouldn't say I actually like the taste of whiskey, I just prefer the taste of the more expensive stuff even though this makes no rational sense when you get down to it.

Yeeeeah, from time to time.
Sometimes I don't have time to choose what I really want more- to have a drink with my buddies or to play alone.
So and I go with my friends, get back a bit drunk ( not that much to be blind and storming), but just a little bit boozed. And of course I start playing. I should say that the reaction is obviously not that sharp. And I'm not on the top.
But I don't care, as far as mostly I prefer playing
