5-4 Points Fuseki Question

Post by dwest »

I started a game against Many Faces, but I'm totally at a loss for where to play now. I fear the central black influence that could be built by white approaching either 5-4 enclosure at the 3-4 point. What would be the conseqeunces of a play near a? Is a high splitting move at around b appropriate? Or approach the top 5-4 corner at c? What to do!? How could my responses to black's two approaches be improved?

This is your problem :batman:

I would play "a" in the diagram below. "b" is second choice, but I think "a" is more important because it prevents an enclosure facing the other 5-4 stone.

Go to josekipedia, thumb through a few of the 5-4 joseki, choose a result that strikes your fancy, play it, and get on with the middle game.

There's nothing to fear. The worst case scenario is you acquire a good feel for how to successfully double-approach the corner.
